Didn't they also purchase a sleeping car recently too? Big step from models to the real thing!

There MAY be others available. Can you budget around C$25,000?

There is an ongoing thread, I think in Loco Notes, that all the IRSI RDCs have been sold to a scrapper and are in danger. Apparently the scrapper is holding off on cutting them in half for ease of transport to his facility.

"Good news" is that apparently the IRSI penchant for overcharging for RDCs is now out of the picture as they don't own them any more. But now is CERTAINLY a good time to acquire RDCs, with the available window perhaps very short.

To point out:

Rapido did not disclose the actual acquisition price, but said it sought $25K in relocation costs plus another $20K for restoration. That's Canadian dollars.

I assume anyone that wants to grab one is going to be in the hole for at least $25K U.S. But aside from playing "vulture" on already-preserved RDCs owned by another group, this may be your last chance to grab one if you have any use for a "modern-day doodlebug" on your operation.

Here my list of RDC's that have been rostered IRS. Some gems including a couple that were completed here in Canada by Canadian Car and Foundry. Hopefully any corrections, will be of cars that have been re-manufactured and back in service.

As of recently I've sent over a message to the IRSI regarding the condition and cost of ex-LV RDC-2 #41. According to previous sources they've had it last valued at 150k CDN following an extensive overhaul by their own shopmen in the early 2000s and won't budge on price. However after more than 10 years on idle and rusting away maybe they'd see a change in thought given someone here would take interest in it. On a counter note I don't blame the Rapido guys one bit for their decision and think it will be just as great to see an original D&A unit operating as well,

Is LV #41 in any immediate danger?

Good thing I'm broke, or I'd be in trouble with the wife for trying to buy the MKT car!

Hi Reading, LV #41 faces scrapping if none decide to purchase within the next few months if I remember correctly. I'm currently in touch with IRSI and will further inquire about maybe keeping it on the market for a tad longer but thats all I can envision. Now if you're intereted in the unit I'd be more than happy to handout a contact. The #41 is serviceable from what is understood but is now re-built as an RDC-1 loosing its baggage compartment. I'd suggest that if you're really a dedicated LV fan simply go for it given that you have the potential 100k to purchase and move the car.

LV # 41 had an interesting career as it served as 3 classes of RDC. Built as a RDC-2.

1958 (Sept) to CPR # 9116 as RDC-2, under CPR E.O. # 5850. In March 1975 the car was converted to a RDC-5 at CP's Angus Shops. The baggage room was converted to almost a makeshift coach area, with subway car / school bus type seats in lieu of the regular comfortable coach seats in the rest of the unit. The baggage doors were sealed off with a sheet of stainless steel (probably the original baggage door) with a window at seat level. It was renumbered # 9306 at this time

In 1978 VIA Rail assumed ownership, but the car probably remained in Montreal's West Island commuter service until it was converted to RDC-1 # 6143 in October 1981 at CNR's Pointe St. Charles Shops. Unfortunatley with LV 41, pictures show the replating where the original baggage doors were, not the best. Some of the other cars converted the only evidence of the baggage area, is the rain gutters on the roof still remain.
