Another pro-rail letter, notable for being from the president of the Preservation League of New York State:

Another story on the Adirondack Scenic, as the managers are attempting to reach out to towns for support.

The comments suggest the trail crowd might be angrier at the railroad than before.

Not directly related to the Adirondack Scenic, but something to consider in what is very likely a unique situation in New York State. For me, it's part of the case for retaining the access the railroad provides for real transportation later on, especially if you want to expand the economy in the Adirondacks.

Note that the "ballot proposal" mentioned in the Times story includes the ability to specify an easement of up to a bit over 49 feet parallel to a road that traverses 'forever wild' State land. If this provision applies to railroad ROW, it eliminates any except pure monetary reasons against full rail-with-trail. It occurs to me that Mr. Keet alone (using the money he seems to be using to buy legislators) could supply most of the 'missing money' for bridging or footings where needed on the anticipated stretches of rail-trail...

Some more news:
Quote:
SARANAC LAKE — Despite having voted down a similar resolution two months ago, the trustees of the village of Saranac Lake passed a resolution Monday night supporting the Lake Placid-Remsen Corridor rail trail.

Passionate supporters of the rail trail and of another option, keeping the train track and placing a pedestrian trail next to it, packed the meeting room to air their opinions during the public comment period.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau was absent Monday night and Trustee Paul Van Cott recused himself, as he is an employee of one party involved in court action about the rail trail — the Adirondack Park Agency.

Trustee Tom Catillaz, who was acting as mayor in Rabideau’s absence, and Trustees Allie Pelletieri and Richard Shapiro voted in favor of the resolution, which states:

“The Village of Saranac Lake hereby reaffirms its support of the Remsen-Lake Placid development plan as put forth by the State in 2016 Unit Management Plan. We recognize the important economic development, tourism, and health benefits that construction of the Adirondack Rail Trail will bring to our constituents. We urge the State to take every step necessary to expedite the appropriate procedural actions to allow construction of the corridor to continue including the appeal of Judge Main’s rail corridor decision. We further urge Governor Cuomo to take any necessary action or authority to designate the Lake Placid to Tupper Lake rail corridor as a NYS Recreation Corridor.”

First the town votes for Alt. 7, then goes against Alt. 7, and now is again for Alt. 7.

I get the impression that some people just can't make up their minds!

The main reason for not constructing a trail is that there are already THOUSANDS of recreational trails in the Adirondacks and you don't need to build one on, about, or near the railroad.

I have to disagree with you Otto -- the Adirondacks have thousands of *hiking* trails and some muddy mountain biking trails, but very few places to legally and safely ride street and touring bicycles.

I don't agree with ripping up the rails but all these rails WITH trail folks don't seem to realize the huge cost that would incur.

Yet another talented young person leaves upstate NY for better opportunities out-of-state:
Quote:
UTICA — The Adirondack Scenic Railroad, which operates seasonal tourist trains, is looking for a new executive director after its director accepted a position in Washington state.

Bethan Maher was hired by the American Heritage Railways to head up the Mount Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum in Washington. She was executive director of the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, which operates the trains under the ASR name.

“Bethan has made an enormous contribution to the success of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad,” Bill Branson, chairman of the ARPS board, said in a press release. “This new challenge is a compliment to Bethan’s work ethic and the success she has helped to make happen in our operations in the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks.”

I wouldn't read too much into this because it isn't unusual for anyone to change jobs if something better becomes available.

These days few people work for one employer all their lives.

That said, it looks like the other Bob H will be getting a new boss !!!!!!!!!!

A local news report here on some local trails says some people are not abiding by the trail rules and running off in their snowmobiles onto private property and doing damage. This is what you may get when you want to trail up.
