Out of general curiosity, during your initial inspection and teardown process of the car, were any pencil, paint, or number markings from the LVRR or CR found? I've been in a few pre-CR era cabins that were covered with different markings and employee slang and I've always enjoyed seeing these different markings.

Also, did the interior of the caboose have any interchangable parts from other LVRR cabins such as brake handles, ice boxes, doors, etc? I know the PRR was very much a fan of using whatever spare parts were laying around to change out broken or outdated appliances.

Thanks,

Christian B.

The only definitive markings I observed was a stencil on the unfinished steel inside the cubby where the icebox was located that said "LEHIGH VALLEY - SAYRE PA. - 1941" or something to that effect. It was photographed and recorded.

I haven't been involved in the re-assembly to see if any of the wooden pieces were marked with slang or other info.

I wanted to provide a much-needed update to this thread. Fresh paint was applied to Lehigh Valley 95100 during the summer of 2021.

One of our members Charles Bell is certified to spray Imron, so we put two nice coats of red to make it last.

I drew the artwork and a local sign shop installed vinyl graphics.

I hand painted the LV diamond logo using masking tape stencils since the logo crossed over so many rivet lines.

The finished product looks pretty nice:

Many volunteers put in an extraordinary effort to get the exterior finished up so the caboose could star in a special night photo session held in August.

And now we are wrapping up the interior finishing. Chuck Whalen did a nice job recreating the missing bench that was ripped out by Conrail sometime in the 1970s.

Certainly a long way from how she looked when she arrived in 2012...

We look forward to putting this car in service on our museum railroad in 2022. Thanks to the countless volunteers, contractors, and donors who kept us going. You can view the entire restoration album here:
