 Post subject: LS&I 21 is moved to Wisconsin

LS&I 2-8-0 # 21 was disassembled and loaded on to four trucks for the move to North Lake WI. It will be unloaded Monday morning at Mid-West Locomotive & Machine Works shop. Work on the locomotive should start before the first of the year.

Is this the "spare" Consolidation from the Grand Canyon Railroad? I understand there is yet another LS&I 2-8-0 insid ethe MGM Grande Casino theme park, at Las Vegas. ANyone seen it or have a picture?

Is #21 the one that was at Mid-Cont? I was there a few years back and one of the LS&I locos was there in mid-overhaul. I thought it was soon to be steaming. If this wasn't #21 which one was it?
I do remember the engine was under private ownership and not part of the collection.

LS&I 21 was the one that remained in storage in Marquette after the rest of them were scattered around the country. The photo below is from the Copper Range web site (www.copperrange.org).

Grand Canyon has 18,20, and 29. They also had 19 for a while, that's the one that went to Las Vegas, and according to steamlocomtive.com is now undergoing restoration in Canon City, Colorado. The one at Mid Continent is no. 22.

And we know that LS&I # 24 is at the museum in Green Bay, Wiscosin. That leaves 2-8-0 # 23 as the only unaccounted LS&I SC-4. I believe she went out east. Anyone know where she now resides and her current status? Thanks.

#23 is in Kingston, NY owned by Empire State Railway Museum. Undergoing slow restoration.

Stumbled across this old thread this morning. I believe that the 21 is privately owned and was moved to the old Kettle Moraine Railway in North Lake, Wisconsin. Just wondered if any serious restoration work has been done on the 2-8-0?

I'm curious about the status of the restoration efforts on these engines. Supposedly, no's 19, 21, 22, and 23 were being worked on several years ago; but I've heard no recent news on them.

Tom -

LS&I #22 is at Mid-Continent and has been cosmetically restored by its private owners. I've never heard of a plan to restore it to operation, although perhaps one could exist.

Jeff Lentz could probably answer this better than me, but the 22 is a sad case of bad timing. A good deal of the boiler work was completed around the turn of the century when the new FRA regulations kicked in, rendering the work unacceptable to their requirements. The owners would have to start over again which is understandably something they weren't willing to do. Since then they've done a beautiful cosmetic restoration of the locomotive. BTW, the 19 is on display in Frisco, Texas as "Frisco 19". It's ego as the coolest steamer in town must've taken a beating when the Age Of Steam collection moved in.

Les, The LS&I 21's running gear is being moved today to Oak Creek, WI this morning. The boiler was moved back in July. The owners of the locomotive are slowly working on its restoration. They have been building a new tender for the locomotive.

So, did all the Marquette & Huron Mountain engines find homes, or were any lost? A long time ago ('81?) while visiting the M&HM, I found it amazing to find so many sister engines intact (although rough) and together in one spot.

Hopefully these survivors will have very happy futures.
