Work Report
Excellent progress was made in sealing up the boiler for its first pressure test. All the turret valves were closed along with all the steam valves around the locomotive. The fill valves were closed, isolating the fill check valves. We built an air test fill assembly so we could isolate the air fill hose from the boiler and installed it on the blowdown flange. We temporarily installed the relief valves on the boiler adapters until we can figure out how to plug the ports for the hydro test. Once the steam dome was put back into place we were ready for an attempt at charging the boiler with air pressure. We positioned people around the locomotive to listen for any escaping air and watch for any unwanted equipment movements. As we started charging the boiler with air we found a couple washout plugs that needed further tightening. Once the hisses and whistle were no longer detected, we started spraying down the caps, seams, piping, and valves with a soapy water solution to find various small leaks. We corrected these as we went since most all of them were resolved with a little wrench tightening. Boiler air fill test assembly.

A maximum of 20 psi was placed on the boiler with it declining over time. All of the detectable air leaks were sealed up although there is still an air leak coming through the throttle body. That will be a project for next week. Everyone was excited to finally see some pressure placed on the vessel and resolving the small leaks throughout the afternoon. We are moving right along with completing an air test. A couple of issues still need to be resolved: the source of the air flow to the throttle body will need to be eliminated, the steam dome gasket will need to be installed, and we will need to find a method to plug the relief valve ports.

Work Report
We had an interesting day that started out with some corrective issues. Our contractor joined us and reviewed our current progress. We discussed several things including trying to resolve the air leak in the dry pipe. We could not find anything definitive as to why it was leaking so we replaced the gasket with a softer rubber material and reassembled the dry pipe cover. It was decided to wait to put the dome cover on for next weekend and possibly the copper gasket will be down by then and we can seal the steam dome.
We spent the rest of the day testing auxiliary equipment. We pressurized the turret with air and charged the air compressors and water pumps, rotated the lubricators and generally went over the locomotive equipment. Still working toward the annual hydro test, we had removed a high pressure steam plug from one of the relief ports to measure for machining. Our contractor is going to machine an additional adapter and three caps for the relief valve ports. The air compressors on both side of the locomotive were lubed, cycled, and performed well.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of Gordon Hartschuh
