Will be interesting to see where it goes...

Discussions with persons involved confirmed Alex #4's statement. Car will be gutted, with salvage of interior components aforethought. It will retain historical name and appearance, but will be high tech inside. Better than hoped for outcome imho.

I just saw on Facebook that this particular car would become of the business/tech fleet of the NS. Here is the link.

This page is interesting as it gives information about important preservation throughout the country, but mainly follows From Delaware to Ohio, with as far north as New York , and as south as North Carolina (mostly, does cover big preservation events from anywhere)

It's cool to learn that there were private spurs under Park Avenue apartments. That NYC feature was new to me.

Per the article:

Quote:
Bell estimates it will cost $40,000 to buy the car and another $30,000 to make it track-worthy again.

Does she do contract work? Most folks I know would have another "0" on that number, so that's a screaming deal if you can get it...

I hate to post a photo if I don't know the credits, but here it is, from the Erie Lackawanna group on Facebook:

It will definitely be a unique car on the NS roster, what with the raised windows and the like. Hope that they do keep it without a lot of changes... will be one right beautiful car!!! (Likely couldn't view the post because I am not a member...)

Reports/rumors elsewhere online speculate, with darned good reason, that this car, currently in or departing Portland, will end up routed Portland-Boston-Mechanicville (Albany) by Pan Am, south to Harrisburg via NS train 11R through Binghamton, Scranton, and Sunbury (possibly Thursday or Friday), then Harrisburg-Roanoke via Hagerstown.

Happy train-chasing.

Lets hope some folks will get to shoot it and post the pix... passenger car photo uploads have been painfully slow for over a year now... even folks who usually shoot pass cars aren't which is disappointing...

The car will keep its conformation, name, and number, by agreement between the seller and buyer. The rebuild is going to take an extended period of time. How much of the conversion will be made public - that's going to be interesting. The party which went after this car, rather than standing to the side and watching it go to scrap, should be congratulated and thanked for their insight into railroad preservation and inclusive modern technology.

I agree: NS are the good guys here, no matter how they restore it. CMQ wanted it out of there, this could very well have ended with the car in pieces in a gondola car.

If you are right (and I suspect you are) this will put her on "home rails" from Bingo to Taylor, PA. Pretty cool...
