Whatever happened to the equipment that was located at Track 29 in downtown Yakima, Washington? I am particular interested in the fate of the ARR F unit #1502 (lettered "Americana"), the passenger cars with it, and the NP caboose.

To the best of my knowledge all the freight cars at Track 29 were scrapped. Not sure what happened to the passenger cars.

The F-Unit shell and two streamlined cars were moved onto a track a couple alleys over, and may still be there.

The steel NP caboose was saved at the last minute by the Northern Pacific Railway Museum in Toppenish, WA.

The rest of equipment was scrapped, including those beautiful old heavyweight passenger cars. It all happened very quickly too.

See this old thread: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35607&p=210333&hilit=Yakima#p210333

If you look on Google Maps the F-Unit shell and two streamlined cars have disappeared.

Does anyone know the fate of the 2 cars that were the daycare? I am also curious as to who owns them currently. I have read they are ex US army cars?

Yes, former U.S. Army hospital cars, from the WWII-era order from AC&F. Acquired by the Monon post-war and streamlined. I don't know the car numbers for these 2, unfortunately.

Regarding the other cars: 2 of the 3 heavyweight Pullmans were ex-UP, and the third was painted as ex-NP, and as a result, I had narrowed it down to one possible car if it truly was ex-NP, but that car is actually in Ohio, so its identity remains a mystery.

Yes, the ex-CofG Budd-built lounge observation from the Man O' War did go to Tennessee, to be reunited with the 2 chairs (coaches) from that train. Regarding the other Budd-built car, an ex-Amtrak, exx-SCL, nee-ACL crew dormitory-baggage, I don't know what happened to it, or to the ex-Alaska RR F7A (de-engined) which was with the 2 Budd-built cars. The nee-ACL car was also no longer on its original trucks, but on a pair of freight trucks.

Here are several photos of Track 29 in 2011:

I found one reference to the F unit still stored in Yakima in September 2016.

Ted -

I'm a bit confused. Are these two ex-U.S. Army, ex-Monon cars still at the day car center or are these the two streamlined passenger cars reported earlier in this thread as being moved?

Okay, this is the problem with recalling things off the top of your head without double-checking it first. After receiving a few messages back-channel (thanks, guys), I realized I was wrong in regards to the 2 cars which made up the daycare, and I apologize for that.

They are both former U.S. Army hospital cars built by AC&F in 1944 in Lot #2733 (100 cars total), but were not among the 28 cars sold to the Monon in 1947. They were instead among the 32 cars sold to the Alaska RR in 1947.

I went back and looked through the previous Track 29 thread (http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35607) from 4 years ago, and among the photos posted of these cars on the 2nd page of that thread by Drew Black is a photo of the car which is not half covered over by the building in the middle. In that photo a car number is visible: #39. This lines up with 1 of the 32 cars acquired by the ARR and this one specifically was rebuilt to a 52 seat chair. Randall lists that it was retired and scrapped in 1974, the year that most of their 32 cars were retired and disposed of as such, but this is obviously not the case. The photos posted in that thread and the photos posted in this thread definitely match the features of the Alaska ex-Army cars.

Again, my apologies for causing any confusion.

Thank you for all the info. Love learning about the history of these things.

Any idea who owns them now?
