Sandy,

Yes, there are a few gravity car carcasses around. Somewhere I have a book that lists all the survivors. It is shocking how many are left.

The "Miners' Cars" were full sized standard gauge cars used on the Penn Division to transport miners to their shifts. There were three "known." One disappeared, one burned and one just left our astral plane this week.

All the best,

Rob

Mr. Mitchell, I think you may be confusing the D&H car for something else. If I am wrong and they did indeed scrap a gravity car then I apologize in spades because I would have rescued it myself if necessary.

The car you posted, under cover in Hawley, PA, is actually from the Pennsylvania Coal Co. gravity line and not the D&H gravity railroad. Believe it or not that car may be more than 160 years old, and even more unlikely is the existence of a sister car in Nay Aug Park just a few miles away. Four cars were bought from the PCC when passenger service on the gravity ceased and provided service to Shohola Glen amusement park. The third of four is built into a house and the last was used as a work shed but slowly decayed in the elements.

The open car and the enclosed car in Honesdale are D&H gravity cars, although the open car may be more of a replica. Amazingly, there may be as many as eighteen D&H cars still around, as many were repurposed locally as cabins or sheds.

Lionel Pocono is correct (I still love that username, very creative).

This is the "miner's car" which I believe ended up with Sloan Cornell.

Rob, if you come across that list and can send me a scan or just the book title I'd appreciate it. thanks

As a side note, while the scrapping of the WB cars as well as the recent loss of the former PCC/Erie headquarters to arson may have given us a bit of a black eye, there is still a ton of railway related preservation occurring in Northeast PA. We just can't save them all, and in all honestly, there is probably too much in one area to be properly cared for. From the gravity RRs, to the D&H canal system, the coal industry itself, to Steamtown and train stations and trolleys, even plain old local architecture, we are drowning in things to be saved.

Yes, a few years ago.

About the same time the FEC observation, a D&H caboose and the cars Andy Muller got left, the ACL obs was torched.

Photos posted to Facebook today show everything gone but the station building and one signal:

Nice doll post signal. Would be nice to have at HVRM. Question; is that a second signal head lower on the post? Hard to tell from the photo with the dark background.

Unfortunate indeed that no one was able to salvage those cool roller-bearing trucks.

A number of parts from the cars was saved for reuse by an excursion railroad while the scrappers were there, according to reports.
