Friends,

I have sucessfully posted a photo before by placing on my personal Yahoo site, but they seem to have done something that blocks the BBCode from picking up the photo. Any other suggestions as to how to get a drawing of the needed rubber window gasket for the caboose would be welcome.

Steve, if you can't get a working photo link up, let me know and I'll put the photos up on my server.

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has had good luck sourcing various shapes and sizes of window mounting rubber from:

SAS Rubber Co.

Good luck,

Okay, here we go again.

Fred Stevens and others at the Steam Railroading Institute in Michigan are restoring Ann Arbor caboose 2839; which restoration I am sponsoring. We have had some success in finding other parts to restore the Adlake windows in the car, but the gasket in Fred's email (ibid) has been checked out through Adlake and R.E. Jackson, and the OEM no longer has the die. Have checked out the usual suspects; Power Parts/GETS/Logan does not have. I will follow up on the SAS lead also listed. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Jackson has the OEM drawing for the rubber; can cut a new die for about $300 plus $1,000 for a minimum order of rubber. Is there anyone else out there in Preservationland that would like to get in on an order? The subject caboose is Wabash/Ann Arbor, but I believe this locking rubber appeared in quite a few cabooses of the 50's and 60's.

Steve:

$1,000 seems pretty high for a minimum run. There are any number of mom and pop style outfits out there that should be able to do a small run for a lesser cost. Many of then do extrusions for such things as automotive restorations. I have used a small company El Segundo, CA called Carr or Karr Rubber, (it's been a few years) but any of those places should be willing to produce a small run. Two other large rail industry (among others) suppliers that come to mind are:

Delford Industries
82 Washington St.
Middletown NY, 10940

Chamberlain Rubber Co.
3333 Brighton Henrietta TL Rd.
Rochester NY 14692

Steve,

Have you asked the company what that $1000 minimum order would roughly translate to in feet of a molding this size?

Is this for a wood or a metal window frame, the drawing looks to be for a metal frame, correct?

Yes, this is a metal frame. The original date on this particular drawing is 1951.

I will check on the footage; on past experience, I would guess that the minimum order will be on the scope of 4-500 lineal feet of rubber; Have not made the calculations, but I suspect the needs for 2839 will be about 60 feet.

All:

I can't see the picture, but just inquiring if the window rubber being referred to is for the cupola sliding windows on the AA cabooses. We (WRHS) were able to acquire some of this Adlake rubber (R-186) through the Monticello Ry. Museum in IL, who did order it through the Logan Corp. The MRM had better luck dealing with Logan than I did, that's for sure!

I posted sort of an installation tutorial video on the WRHS YouTube channel. I did not find the project to be too difficult; YMMV.

James, well done with the video. It was an a-ha moment for me after wrestling with a similar window gasket.

This same type of seal is also used on NYC N7A cabooses, of which there are quite a few around. However they don't have the rounded corners so you must bevel each corner.

Are there any sources on that window gasket material used in the youtube viceos? We could use some for an N7A caboose, which uses the same gasket.

May of 2015 was the last time we purchased some of this from Logan. It is PPC 5674, and comes in 16' 2" lengths for, at the time, $19.45 ea.. One length was enough to do one window in the Wabash caboose cupola, so four lengths per car are required. See the below email, and give Jason a call if you still need it. Also note the lead time in his email.

Good morning sir, I can still get this weather strip. The cost has gone up some it is now $19.45 each and it also has a bit of lead time. (12-13 weeks) let me know if you would still like to proceed.

Thank you
