Just wondering if anyone else has been through something like this and what the proper protocol might be;

A few months ago a class I railroad whose track runs adjacent to a museum I work with gave said museum a bunch of good, useable ties. The ties were moved to the museum property and stacked up on the museum's track. The ties were neatly stacked and segregated by size, clearly not a trash pile.

Over the weekend, the class I sent a clean up crew through town. They loaded all of the museum's nice new ties into the trash gondola and took them away never to be seen again. Now what?

Jason -

Hope somebody can give you some idea as to how to get your ties back. However, it goes to show that you need to mark stuff; with things like "DO NOT SCRAP" and "PROPERTY OF A.B.C. RAILROAD MUSEUM", etc. This is one time where paint spray cans can be a GOOD thing.

call them ASAP and tell them your ties were taken by a clean up crew, don't bother to mention that they were donated, its not important. It's likely a contractor did it anyways. If they can enter your property and 'mistakenly' take donated stuff, what else might vanish?

Another option for the future - We had a bunch of good ties donated by a Class 1. We got a release form to be able to enter the property, pick 'em up and haul 'em ourselves back to our yard. We traded the use of a heavy equipment trailer and truck and all-terrain fork lift in exchange for some of the ties. Worked well for everybody.

Contact the road ASAP and tell them you want the ties back. Years ago the Puget Sound Ry. Historical Assn. at Snoqualmie, WA was given a batch of wood work equipment box cars by the Burlington Northern. They were delivered to Snoqualmie when word came down from on high that all wood cars had been sold to a scrapper. The BN demanded that all the cars be returned. No amount of pleading or offers of cash worked. All the cars were removed from the museum, turned over to the scrapper and burned.

Jason, did you have any kind of written agreement in place to accept the ties? If not, like others have said, do your best to get back in touch with the local manager or supervisor who authorized the donation to begin with. Contractors move fast, so it might be pretty tough to get THOSE exact ties back. Best of luck to you. Sure sucks when stuff like that happens.

Hi Jason,

Any luck on contacting the railroad for the missing ties?
