Whitcomb Help.. Please..

Hi,

I'm looking for information on an 80 ton Witcomb 80DE21. It's owned by the St Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern. It was PPG 911 and was built in 1952 serial 61197. It has Cummins NHRS diesels in it.. I'm looking for history and a whitcomb manual. I have Cummins manuals.. We are looking at restoring it to operation, so any help will be appreciated.

Machinehead61 is a bit of a Whitcomb buff, he is from Rochelle IL where the Whitcomb factory was located (it still stands though it was recently vacated by its last user). Here is a thread he started a few years back:

Hi,

The library at the California State RR Museum in Sacramento has a lot of the Whitcomb
records and documents. For some locos they have the actual shop floor production
documents. And possibly correspondence, builders photos, etc.

An inquiry to them about the manual for that type of loco; along with the construction
number / date built of your loco might turn up useful info for your project.

As westward stated the California State RR Museum in Sacramento is your best bet. Our museum in Rochelle has very little compared to California. After Baldwin closed their Eddystone plant there was a Whitcomb service group that had all of the blue prints for all of the Whitcomb locos and when the service group closed shop they found California was willing to take the Whitcomb records and prints.

Thanks! What I wanted to know most was who it was built for... I have a request for info into the RR Museum of PA.. I was told they have some Whitcomb records.. I'll send a request to CSRRM, too.. Thanks again!!
