Hello everyone,
I am 15 years old and new to RYPN. Someone said that i should join because of a project i am doing. On Wednesday October 26th i am moving a 1930 Boston and Maine boxcar from Waterbury CT to Woodstock CT. This project is mainly funded by donations and i could still use a lot of help! Please check out this link to make a donation and/or to see photos of the boxcar. https://www.gofundme.com/1930boxcar The photos can be found in the description on the go fund me page. I can't thank people enough for donating. This move could not be done without the 250+ people who have donated so far!
Any amount helps. I need to have all donations in by Monday. The total cost of the transpiration will cost $5000.
Thank you
Orion Newall

Orion, got a quick question. So where you're raising $3000 and the cost is $5000, where's the difference coming from? Just a bit curious...

I would make a safe assumption that his family, which are already willing to have a boxcar in their yard, is helping out a little bit financially. Also, using the same methods I use on restoring my boxcar, he probably has some close connections and friends also willing to help outside of the internet.

Just a thought.

Congratulations! We need more of THIS sort of result when a youth contacts RYPN for help.

Congratulations, Orion! There's a "new star" in sincere railroad preservation.

I often wondered about what happened to this young man's efforts to move, and restore, an old single sheathed (outside braced) wood boxcar to his parents property and then restore it. Well, it turns out that this 15 year old has been successful and now about 5 years later, has made arrangements to send restored B&M # 72249 to the Danbury Railroad Museum for display! The interview with him is on the Ahead of the Torch website. A very interesting story concerning the restoration and other info.

There's also Orion's Facebook page,

with many photos showing his restoration effort.

Apparently, Orion has until October to get the boxcar out of the back yard. This looks to be about the best spot to build a temporary access road at Danbury...

"I have until October 2021 to move the boxcar out of the backyard. This was the original agreement between my parents and my original promise, to finish the car in 5 years or less."

I can't imagine his parents would scrap the boxcar if it wasn't moved right at the end of October.

I'm sure the date is somewhat negotiable, Emmo. LOL If they took this particular tree out and trimmed back a couple of the others, the truck should be able to swing that corner, no problem. Those are non-native Village Green Zelkovas, anyway, so no great loss there...

Let me also congratulate you on your success, even more so because you got there at such a young age. By comparison, every project I tried to do when I was your age completely fizzled out, and for many, many years after that, too. To be fair about it, your folks deserve some of the credit for standing behind you -- again, just my personal case, but my family did everything they could to sabotage my attempts, and they had plenty money to put some teeth in it. I'm sure glad that hasn't happened to every young person that tries to fix up an old train.

Keep up the good work, Best of Luck, Take Care & WORK SAFE,
Sammy & Audrey

Orion is a very impressive young man and the owner of several pieces of equipment. He is a self motivator and has gotten involved with many aspects of the business from administrative/board tasks right down to taking out the trash. I have worked with him on projects in the shop, doing track work, and as train and engine crew. He is a licensed freight and passenger conductor and has started to make some good connections with other organizations in the field. He has a promising future and I’m glad not only to work with him, but call him my friend.

Yeah Randy, thanks to Les for bumping this thread back up. I'm an Orion fan now also and that only took less than a week. LOL Tell him he needs to get his butt back on here and change his handle to "B&M Boxcar Man".

Have you guys figured out yet how you're getting that thing into the museum?

I’ll have to ask him. I know he has some connections in heavy hauling but don’t know if he has anything successfully lined up at this time. Also remember, the car is going to the Danbury Railway Museum, not RMNE. RMNE sold the car to Orion as it was surplus to the collection.
