Post subject:  Illinois Railway Museum takes Delivery

Folks,
The Railfan & Railroad reports that IRM now has the Contrail #4601; it was built as Virginian #131, then New Haven #300, then Penn Central 4601, then Conrail #4601. Is Class E33 an electric locomotive?

It came from the collection of the Railroad Museum of New England; and was stored at Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Altoona completed the cosmetic restoration and shipped it out already? Hadn't been touched just a few weeks ago.

Surprised it got all the way to IRM without any notice from railfans, as best as I can tell.

What paint scheme did they go with in the end?

Where did you see this? I'm looking at the R&R Magazine's Facebook page and I don't see anything about it. The last thing I saw was a month ago, it was pulled from the dead lines at Altoona and stored on another storage track - but nothing has been posted since.

take a look at altoonaworks facebook page and look at their 9/26 post. May also hint at the livery it will emerge in. I really doubt that it's been completed in less than a month looking at its condition - but - anything is possible?

Uhh, no. Big Jim is correct. It's still at Altoona on a storage track last I heard.

Its an electric. VGN was classed EL-C reclassed later by other lines E33, GE later made E44's
used on the PRR.

They decided to keep it in the Conrail colors.

Hi,

If I recall correctly, the E33 (VGN, NYNH&H) has the same chassis as the E44 (PRR). It also may be that the E50 has the same chassis as the E44 and E33.

Ahhhh, LocoNotes. What you read was a report someone made in 2015 that the E33 was *destined* to IRM, but it did not say that it was delivered. In fact, there's a report in the December issue that the E33 is sitting in Altoona waiting its turn in the paint shop.

On New York, Hew Haven & Hartford, they were Class EF-4, the 4th kind of Electric Fright locomotive.

The #4601 was seen in the consist of a westbound manifest at Horseshoe Curve about 80 minutes ago (5:13 AM local time). It has not been repainted/cosmetically restored.

I wonder why it is being returned to the museum without any work being done to it. It could be for many different reasons such as the length of time that it has just been sitting waiting to get into the shop or something else. Anyway I look forward to watching its progress towards the windy city and ultimately the museum.

Looking back a few years ago when UP 6944 got repainted in Altoona it took about a year for its repaint and body work, while the CR 4601 has not only been at Altoona longer, but was moved into the shops as stated by Altoona works.

Conrail #4601 will be coming to the IRM despite not receiving a cosmetic restoration at Altoona. It appears that NS had some prioritizing to do and it did not involve the #4601. The IRM administration thought it would be better to have it arrive in Union now than to have it sitting for an additional period. Additional prospects call for some sort of operational repairs and a running future on the IRM demonstration track. I'm not sure how they would pursue this goal but their caretakers certainly believe in it.
