When it comes to jewelry, we have possession of everything except the whistle, marker lights and builders plates (cab gauges were removed in the 1950s-60s for steam restoration and operation efforts elsewhere in the Chicago region.) The whistle apparently was removed in the early 1990s and we're following up with rumors/reports of where it went and who removed it, but so far have turned up nothing. Our agreement with the City of Hammond also requires copies of all documentation related to 624 and components like the bell, which is on display across the street. I think what you may be seeing is the jacketing around the casting. There appears to be some damage from when the engine was moved so the other display equipment could be inserted behind it, but nothing sinister. |

The H-6 class was prone to cylinder cracking, and outside bracing was applied to forestall it. The bracing is visible on photos of the 624, and also appears here in this photo (Gary Thompson collection) of the ill-fated 636 which was wrecked twice (1942 and 1943),

Thanks rl - the brace was what I was referring to. Kelly - I questioned it because I didn't see one on the left side, at least not in any pictures that have been posted/linked here. Would be interesting if the cylinder halves were so different that they were prone to failure on just one side. They aren't three cylinder engines are they? |

Indeed, the braces are aftermarket mods - likely removed from 624 when they did the abatement in the 70s. We understand the NKP did this more as a preliminarily measure once they noticed failures (rather quickly in the late 20s) and less as a bandaid. 587 had them at one point as well. 2 cylinder only. |

I did some digs apparrently FWRRHS also got the caboose and reefer. |

When I was at the museum today, someone told me that the South Shore caboose had been moved out. If so, then Kelly, or somebody from the FtWRHS should be able to confirm that they have moved it, or what exactly happened to it. Les |

Has the Fort Wayne group done a preliminary check on 624s mechanical condition? It would be nice to know if her condition will allow a economical rebuild to operation. |

LOL Steve A W I was actually worried about that, every so often I check up on that guy googling but I don't see any new info. I emailed NICTD about the bridge but no response, but their planned extension shows a route away from where the bridge was. They need to come forward and verify the caboose. They have a habit of not announcing various things because it goes rumbling around the railfans fast and you know how that causes some bad information to start floating around, so I am being careful. |

We wanted to get in and get out this week without drawing too much attention to the site.

Les Although nothing from the FtWRHS, I heard today that the South Shore caboose was sighted at another location. Since I'm not sure this is for publication yet, I'll not mention where this location is. However, it's good to know that the rare South Shore caboose HAS apparently been saved. Les |
