I neglected to photograph the cab which sits on the ground nearby. Photos taken a few minutes after 765 passed nearby on her way home. Here is the front end.

Thanks for the update on URTX refrigerator car #37076. I knew she was in pretty good shape and glad you will be able to use her with the 624. They've been together for many years now so good to know that will continue.

I was watching videos of the 765 on Joliet rocket and saw the aux. tender does FWRHS got their aux tender restored for 765 and maybe 624? or was that by lease? anyway is there plans for cosmetic or full blown restoration for 624 I wonder which one as of yet? is there anymore big partnerships and/or mainline excursions for the group and 765 and maybe 624 in the future or is it just a wait and see? I also was thinking when it comes to fuel costs with the coal industry dying could this mean that operating the 765 and maybe 624 be more affordable or more costly? Just a thought.

That is FWRHS's Aux. Tender. Recently restored. They have been leasing VMT's A tank used behind 611.

According to FWRHS, it is a cosmetic restoration with a possibility of a operational restoration. Depending on condition, money, etc.

Other than that, Mr. Lynch will have to point you in the right direction.

Trying to illustrate what makes 765 an example of Super Power particularly the huge firebox.

I don't know if I scaled these two images correctly but it's based on the driver diameter. In theory it is correct but 624 does still look a little too small.

The 2-8-4's had 69 inch drivers, while the 2-8-2's had 63 inch drivers.

A few specifications (gleaned from Wes Barris' steamlocomotive.com site) illustrate the difference:

The class S Berkshire has a grate area of 90.3 square feet, 4772 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 1992 square feet of superheating surface; the total heating surface is 247.04% of the cylinder volume.

The class H-6d Mike has a grate area of 66.7 square feet, 3744 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 882 square feet of superheating surface; the total heating surface is 203% of the cylinder volume.

The differences show why the Berkshire can apply a lot more "heft' to get a train going and keep it running at a good speed.

Yes, I took driver diameter into account sizing the image. I measured pixels across the middle of the drivers from the left edge of the left most to the right edge of the right most and adjusted size so that 765 is 69/63 bigger (about 110% the size of the similar measure on 624). Not perfect but it'll do. A broadside image with someone holding up a ruler would be ideal. LOL

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a combustion chamber in addition to that firebox?

I didn't find mention of a combustion chamber in my source, so I will leave that question to someone more knowledgeable. A combustion chamber diverts the gases from the fire so they have a longer pathway and more time to burn, adding to the heat sent through the flues which (eventually) produces more superheated steam.

I did find this relevant note in my source: "Firebox had two thermic syphons offering a total of 98 sq ft (9.3 sq m) of heating surface and two arch tubes with an additional 19 sq ft (1.75 sq m)."
