ISTR a couple of instances where cast beds were severely damaged, and I think this led to the engines involved being scrapped. I don't think the Hudson in the Gulf Curve accident at Little Falls had a full cast bed but was certainly not repairable; the situation could be that damage substantial enough to knock a bed sufficiently out of line would 'total' enough of the other structure and other components on the engine.

Yeah that locomotive was almost completely destroyed. No weld could repair this engine. Note that this is the only NYC Hudson to be retired due to an accident; all others were cut up at the end of their service life. To give perspective, this wreck was in 1940, only a few years after the J3’s were built, but certainly near the height of steam on the NYC

The PRR M-1b has a cast steel frame. Nevertheless, the welded repairs had to be properly done, as they are in high-stress areas.

The NYC Hudson (5315?) had it's frame bent 180 degrees-- that's the #3 driver under the cylinders!

On a related note- does anyone know how the modifications were done on the Pennsy T-1 that was retrofitted with piston valve cylinders (no. 5547)? I don’t think they cast an entire new engine bed for it, but perhaps they did. If the original engine bed was modified with new cylinders and brackets for the Walschaert’s valve gear, that was some impressive welding for the time.
