Breaking News - The T1 Trust has acquired the last remaining 16-wheel PRR long haul tender in existence.

Judging from the coaling tower in the background of the 1978 photo, this looks like it may have been the tender that was at the tiny PRR engine terminal in Hagerstown for years. I think it may have been used as a diesel fuel storage tank at that time.

In one fell swoop the project has made a tremendous leap forward. If you split a locomotive into three main assemblies, boiler, running gear and tender, the T1 is a third of the way to becoming a reality!

I assume the tender has couplers on both ends. After adding the cowling and doing the paint job, the tender could be exhibited at various museums in the northeast as a goodwill ambassador for the project. Exciting times!

I thought this tender was going to be paired with the I1sa in Hamburg, New York? Glad for the T1 people to get it for their project. Are the trucks identical to the T1's?

I was told the "Queen Mary" flatcar trucks are off scrapped T1's.

I think that was the original plan. Maybe the WNYRHS folks finally figured out that their "plans" were actually only dreams and they might as well let someone else have the tender instead of watch it and the I1 rot away into oblivion.

The I1sa appears to get regular paint and attention. The fact she's rolled a rail under the fireman's side is a bit problematic!

30%, of a 10 Million dollar budget funded already? These guys are good.

I have said it once, and I will say it again. They have done more in the last 2 years, then most have done in 20.

Good for them. Cant wait to see this thing roll.

I thought we had a thread here about a T1 tender turned into a flatcar...we bounced ideas toward this project as a possibility...rahs for the aquisition.

Not exactly. This needs reading carefully... they state:
Quote:
Building such a tender would have depleted the Trust’s coffers by an estimated $3 Million. As a result of this purchase, the T1 Trust’s $10 Million budget is now 30% funded and the project may be several years closer to completion.

So what they've really done is "saved" $3m by buying the tender. Based on their (now) $7m budget, and stated $535k raised, they've actually raised about 8% of the total. Still an impressive amount of cash, and the fact they're able to show some large physical chunks of hardware probably significantly increases their fundraising prospects.

Yes, I did go back and re-read. They have some interesting ways of wording going on there...

I still wish them the best, but they should restate how they have that article written.

It's a frame being used as a flat car in a steel mill; still worthy of preservation in my opinion, if just to have a spare set of trucks.

It was. The tender was (somewhat inexplicably) acquired by the Wilmington & Western around 1980, and for a spell was supposedly used as fuel oil storage for the oil burners they were then using, 0-6-0T 3 and 2-8-2T 37. It was sold to the Hamburg group around 1989 or so, as memory serves, and transported up there by rail in the era when such things could still happen.

For the record, 4483 has been documented as operating in its last days with either the smaller 90F82 tender or the larger 210F82 tender.
