Post subject:  UP Budd RPO Whereabouts?

Anyone happen to know the current location of the UP Budd RPO 5911? It was for sale for a while allbeit at a high price for a car of it's type.

I understand Via Rail might have tried to purchase this car and walked away because of the high asking price a couple of years ago.

In 1991 VIA bought UP #'s 5907, 5909, 5910, 5906, 5903, 5905 and modernized with HEP and renumbered # 8618 - 8623 (in order as listed)

I don't know for sure but as far as I know this car has never sold and should still be in storage in the E. St. Louis, IL area.

Well, It's kinda like looking for a ghost. UtahRails.net lists the following,

UP 5911; to UP 24488 in April 1969; to UP 904288 in September 1970; sold to Kristin Sales in 2001; to Illinois Transit.

I was just hoping someone would be able to confirm any of the above or have a picture of the car in use or scrapped if bought for only a parts source?

I spoke with the party that owns the former UP 5911 this morning - the car has been used as additional workshop space for other projects in adjacent cars. It is stored in an undisclosed safe and secure location, with long term plans to return to service as a multi-use event and head end car.

Union Pacific had removed all the RPO fixtures when it was in service as an MOW tool car, but the doors and windows are all still in place. Gerry Hall with VIA Rail knew exactly where the car was, and even discussed a lease, but their need for it went away circa 2009. The high asking price was in accordance with the understanding that the 5911 was the last conventional/heritage type car built by the Budd Co. prior to Metroliner/Amfleet production. The sale listing on the Gateway Rail page is out of date, and the car is currently not on the market.

Former UP 5908 is still reported to be at Monte Vista, CO where the FEC 148 was fished out from, and was last used (but not owned) by San Luis and Rio Grande as a tool car when SP 1744 was operating in 2008/2009.

While the 9 UP RPO baggage cars were certainly among the last conventional (non-gallery) lightweight passenger cars built by the Budd Company having been delivered in August and September of 1963, they were not the last such cars. I believe that honor would go to the 2nd order of Hi-Level cars built for the Santa Fe and delivered from December of '63 to April of '64, and also the Lot 9607 shorty RPO cars built for the Santa Fe and delivered in May and June of '64.
