Can we expect UP #428 at the IRM to see steam this year? I have a soft spot for these well proportioned steamers.

In a word, no. Though we've made a lot of progress, she still needs running gear, brake, and wheel work, just to name a few things. We are in desperate need of funds, so please consider donating to the project through the donations page at IRM.org. Funds will determine when she steams again.

Wasn't the Shay getting close to being ready to run?

The shay is getting finished up and will be up and running in a couple months. The big things left to do are finish the grates, install the liner in the smoke box, and finish drilling the wood beams for the front of the engine.

As John said 428 is still a few years out. However, with the shay out of the shop and in service we will be able to focus more of our effort into the 428.

Eureka and Palisades No 4, Eureka, Baldwin 4-4-0, 1875, 3' gauge... is reported to have completed her 1472 day FRA inspection today. She received a state boiler ticket several weeks ago.

Her previous FRA ticket had expired, and she had received a waiver for continued operation, but that waiver has expired several years ago. She still held a Nevada State ticket which allowed operation in Nevada and in California (via reciprocity) The new FRA ticket will enable trips to Colorado to operate on either the D&S or the CT&S. Also, per the owner... "after 25 years it was time to pull the tubes and take a look at the boiler"
