Rails and Tales 2017 - Stettler Alberta Canada

Rails and Tales 2017 is a partnership between non-profits and business to present a celebration of Canada’s Railways and their influence on Canadian history and development. It is being planned as part of Canada’s 150th Birthday celebrations and will be hosted in Stettler and Big Valley Alberta. The event will feature displays, events and two operating Steam Locomotives plus one static display Steam Locomotive. The two operating locomotives are Alberta Prairie Railway 1920 Baldwin #41 and the Alberta Railway Museums 1913 Montreal Locomotive Works #1392. The Rocky Mountain Rail Society’s 1944 Montreal Locomotive Works CN6060 will be on static display. The event will run from June 28, 2017 until July 5, 2017 in the Village of Big Valley and Town of Stettler. The steam locomotives will be operating under the direction of Alberta Prairie Railway to provide trips from Stettler Alberta to Big Valley Alberta. Several different types of trips are planned over eight days including double headed steam trips, lunch and dinner trips, a morning cruise with breakfast and a leisure trip stopping at many of the historical sites along the line. Both locomotives will be featured on roundtrip excursions each day.
In conjunction with the Alberta Prairie Railway train trips, Rails and Tales will be presenting an eight-day exposition demonstrating how Canadian railways influenced the culture and the development of our country. It will include themes celebrating different sectors of Canadian Society. This will include Metis Culture, Railway History, Pioneer Days and a Canada Day Celebration. Current partners involved include Alberta Prairie Railway (Stettler, AB), the Metis Association of Alberta, East Central Alberta Heritage Society (Stettler, AB), Canadian Northern Society (Camrose/Big Valley, AB), The Village of Big Valley (Big Valley, AB), the Alberta Railway Museum (Edmonton, AB) and the Rocky Mountain Rail Society (Calgary, AB).
This event is being planned as a celebration of Canada’s history and the influence the railway played in it. Tickets will be available starting mid February 2017 by contacting Alberta Prairie Railway in Stettler, AB at 403-742-2811.
