We had our first work detail over the weekend. We cleaned out all the mud dauber nests and cobwebs out of the cab. We also tore out the plywood floor which had been waterlogged. We are still working on getting the handbrake operating, as the WD=40 was not enough to loosen it. The engine area is pretty clean, as it was closed up. We knew the engine had been replaced, and finally found the ID plate. The new engine was a Cummins NHC-250 installed in 11/72. I went on line and found the operating and maintenance manuals for the engine. Between those documents and the Locomotive manual sent to me by one of our members, we have most of the documentation needed. I did send an e-mail to Cummins and Exide requesting further information, but have not heard back. We also verified that the starter and alternator were for a 24 volt system. Our biggest task is going to get the cracked bell housing repaired or replaced. Our society would like to thank all the members of this forum who have supplied advice and information. |

For those of us who are not familiar with who you are, would you care to tell us which locomotive and group this is about? |

Is your handbrake the style with the round shaft running through the cab floor, and it's rusted to the very thick floor? We got ours loose with a combination of TONS Of heat (BIG torch), placing a jack under the shaft and jacking, and beating it with a sledgehammer. |

Sorry, about that: The locomotive is a 1941 GE 23 ton switcher. Our society is the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad Historical Society. It is based in Fillmore California in Ventura County north of Los Angeles.http://www.scrvrhs.com/ We work closely with the Fillmore and Western Tourist Railroad http://www.fwry.com |
