Is RYPN really slow right now, or is it just me?

I was about to post the same question. Speed seems to come and go at times. It's been going on for a couple days, now.

Last night the service on the site was awful, but at least it seems to be fixed now.

I thought of this as well. With all of the denial of service (DOS) attacks lately, it wouldn't surprise me; I think it's worth mentioning here that Trainorders got hit with a DOS attack the other week (that attack was traced back to Turkey, not Russia for once). However, I think a DOS attack would've most likely crashed RYPN's physical host server entirely (instead of the extreme sluggishness witnessed in the last couple of days), so maybe not.

Any thoughts or insights, fellow forum members?

DOS/DDOS attacks shouldn't crash the server. They simply use up all the bandwidth and resources. It's like opening 83 photos in Photoshop or using 10 different programs at once on your laptop. Everything is still running, but the response time is so slow it's not useful.

There are plenty of potential causes. It could be a hardware issue, bad network card or other issue. Presumably the server is in a facility that also hosts other machines, and they share bandwidth. If some other site gets totally hammered, every machine on the network will share in the problem. It would have to be pretty severe to make it as slow as it was though.

Hackers routinely probe servers for a way to log in. Wordpress is extremely popular now, and it's a favorite target. The most popular 404 page on my server logs? wp-login.php. The default WP login page. It got so bad that I installed a little script that records their IP address and sends it to a site that logs hackers. When combined with the same scrip from 100's of other sites, it finds ip's that are trying to hack system and logs them so you can block them.

Sorry to hear of the problem, but I'm glad it's not the death throes of my old Mac that I was fearing.

Very slow in Oregon at 1:20PM Thursday, and when seeing the list of topics, over on the left where there is a box with a folder symbol in it I am not seeing the folder symbol but am seeing the letters "unr" (I am guessing for "unread messages").

Edit: the folder symbols are back, and running a bit faster 40 minutes later.

E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-E-Y S-L-O-W here in Lancaster, Pa. this morning. Took more than two minutes to load the page, and nearly a minute for each topic. No problem anywhere else, however.

Response time is Soooooo Slooooooow this morning. Reminds me of a dream where you are trying to get away from something and you're moving in slow motion. If the slowness continues, the thread about the usefulness of the forum may have another factor to consider.

Forum has the speed of a slug here at the moment...........

Might not be down to Vlad - Could be that man with a bad haircut in North Korea taking exception to the fact their preserved steam loco hasn't been featured on here yet!!!
