The Knox and Kane RR has always fascinated me. It was unique and thick with history and horrible hardships. I kept trying to ride/photograph/video the SY58 in operation, and I had always looked forward to the reemergence of the H&BT 38. I would love to find some footage or a wealth of images because of my obsession, especially now that it's gone. I have a few I took myself, but not much. Can anyone help? I'd be interested in purchasing or trading stuff.

Berkshire Productions did a tape on the K&K (or originally the KK&K) around 1990 right after 1658/58 arrived, complete with the pedal-operated full-on/off whistle. There's also has some rare footage on the tape of 38 running up there when the bridge was re-dedicated. Footage of the K&K also appeared in one of their Montage Series tapes, but I haven't seen it, so can't say if there is any "new" footage there that didn't end up in the full-length program.

Erie Valley Videos, http://www.geocities.com/nsrailfan/Erie ... ideos.html did a tape in 2002. There's some rare stuff on that tape with a rare steam trip south of Marienville and a very nice segment of the regular diesel-powered freight in the snow.

That's all the released footage that I know of. If anyone else shot it, it's like our stuff which was never released. After a failed attempt in 1998 during the diesel shortline break of the Syracuse NRHS Convention, we found diesel substituting for a vandalized-induced derailment of 58. The next year, we had better results and got it running in October 1999. Went up for EBT's Fall Spectacular and after a day of rain with more rain in the forecast for the next day, called up to Marienville and they said steam was running.

Chased it through horrible weather, but some outstanding fall color, up to the bridge. We were planning to chase it south, but decided to break off after crossing Kinzua southbound for a LONG drive home planning to come back in better weather. Unfortunately, that return trip never happened. Upon viewing much later, the video came out surprisingly well, and we may end up releasing it one day, but the market for a K&K tape is unfortunately rather slim--as you might expect.

Always thought the scenic aspect of the trip was never exploited to it's full potential other than the bridge, as the Allegheny National Forest is beautiful to see in person. K&K was one of the last long-distance train rides on the east coast--and probably one of the last real shortlines--but it was burdened by being literally in the middle of nowhere with a LONG drive to get there.

Good luck,
Kevin

Yes, it really was a one of a kind. The last long distance steam train RR in the east. There probably isn't much of a market for the footage, but I'd be willing to pay for it. I really tried hard to get some of my own, but hardly got any. I'm more interested in SY58 as I remember it in 1997, not so much with the on off whistle. The whistle they had on it in 1997 was quite memorable, and made everything quite unique.

If you don't already have a copy, look for a soft cover book titled "Ex-Baltimore & Ohio Lines in Northwestern Pennsylvania" by Robert W. Burns. It is mostly a picture book with about half the pages devoted to the Knox & Kane and the other half to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh. Self published by the author in 1999.

I only rode the train once, in the fall of 1997, and took a few slides.

I've lived in the area and taken several hundred slides over the years, but no video. Send me a PM with your e-mail.

I have quite a few photos of the line in its last days running freight. I never did catch the stream trains. I also rode the last passenger train from Marionville to the trestle.

Contact me by E-mail I would be willing to trade some photos. I too am looking for any photos I can get ahold of.

I'm having a hard time finding an appropriate thread for this news:

I was in Mt. Jewett on Wednesday.

The K&K tracks between Kane and Mt. Jewett were scrapped recently.

Rails and ties have been removed. A surprising number of ties are in good condition!

My pics of the K&K through the years are here:

First one is a trip with #58. Second two are of the one-off run to Knox with the Alco S6 from 1993. There are other videos out there too.

In addition to the long out-of-stock Berkshire Videography tape, there was a DVD offered a while back on Ebay called "Knox and Kane Steam Railroad which came on a plain DVD. It appears to be someone's private footage, but those are the only 2 videos I am aware of. I have a few slides I took in my one visit there in 1992. You can PM me if interested.

I used to walk those tracks between Mt. Jewett and Kane a lot when I was growing up. My father was from Mt. Jewett, the family home was on Rt 6, with the B&O/BR&P in front of it and the B&O/former Big Level & Kinzua behind it. Yes that was originally a three foot gauge line. I remember the turntable pit just outside of town on that line. The family homestead is gone now, and now another piece of my childhood is also.

I know it's not the Knox and Kane but 58 is running as Essex Steam Train #3025 now. Here is a smartphone video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=307RUuPvofQ&app=desktop
