Now over on the thread about the Trolley Museum of New York's Model 55 Brill some questions came up as to M-55 down on the Black River and Western... Assuming the information is accurate the powerglide transmission will need to be replaced because the housing is cracked. But as I'm looking at the few more recent pictures of the interior that I can find I've started wondering how you get the current transmission out... Is the floor and doghouse up front removable, or do you have to take the whole front of the doodlebug apart to get to that transmission? |

If it's like the M55 at the Kentucky Railroad Museum (Frankfort & Cincinnati M-55-1), you can pull the entire engine and transmission out via the radiator opening. It looks like the BR&W car and the one at TMNY had an "extension" grafted on the body when a new engine was installed, presumably by either Sperry or Remington. The one at KRM had a 3 speed manual that was purportedly original, but was replaced by a 5 speed unit from an International truck. With the built in high-low transfer case, it gives you 10 speeds forward and 5 in reverse. |

On the M-55, When we put the 396 in, we pulled the front panel off, the engine was lifted via engine hoist... The engine cover and, I believe, the floor over the trans are removable... Installing the engine was a bit of a process...as the coupler pocket area is not removable..so the hoist stuck in thru the radiator space... both engine and trans lifted from below... The trans is a relatively easy change...it only requires three men...two to lift and one to supervise... |
