At the Curry Club restaurant in Stony Brook, NY there is reportedly a Frisco observation car along with an ex-REA reefer. Many years back I do remember there also being a few cabooses on the site but they have long disappeared. Accordingly the original owners had a railroad themed joint with a lot of historic paraphernalia but have since moved on in favor of the current Indian establishment. Do any forum members have any information regarding the history of the equipment present including the Frisco coach? I'll post a link down below to help out.

Hi Cameron,

You've posed a question I've been meaning to ask here myself! The original railroad-themed restaurant was called "Dining Car 1890" and was an old favorite of mine from early childhood (my parents used to take me and my brother there for our birthdays). In addition to the heavyweight observation car, there were two cabooses and a reefer, the latter used as the restaurant's walk-in refrigerator. I know nothing about the origins of the equipment though, and have always wondered what their histories were.

It became an Indian restaurant in the late 1980s (?) and the cabooses were removed at that time, but the reefer and heavyweight remain to this day.

I've been intending to go and take pictures to post here, but haven't gotten around to it. (Maybe I'll go there for lunch some day later this week, since you've reminded me...)

I stopped for the lunch at the Curry Club restaurant (Setauket, NY) on Friday 2/17 and took some pictures of the mystery heavyweight.

As you can see, the car has roller bearings, which just adds to the mystery, since I know for a fact it has been in this location since at least the late 1970s. (The embankment in the background is the LIRR Port Jefferson line, so it's within 100 feet of active track.)

An identification plate of some kind on one of the trucks. Do these numbers mean anything to anyone?

As others have noted before me, the end platform appears substantially homemade and even amateurish (in the bad sense of the word). Was the car even originally an observation, or was it just modified to resemble one?

it may have recieved roller bearing trucks sometime, or a spur of the moment find for the car when being located.

I heard it was originally a Frisco Business car. It's been years since I heard the full story. Last time I was there was the old dinning car 1890's days when I was a kid for Easter.

The business car appears to be SLSF Kansas, ex-7, exx-5, nee-2500.
