Post subject: | Enola PA - visit in the yards in 1971 and after ConRail |
Hi, As I have sometimes posted before, I have had several family members work for the PRR/PC/CR/Amtrak - all hired on to the PRR. Since this did not fit under the Steam Stories thread, I was not going to mention this. However, I knew I had a few photos of the Enola Roundhouse. My Uncle Walter who drove a crew jitney around the Enola area getting road crews into Enola when trains could not get into Enola, Took me in in 1971. I was 15. Looking at these photos, I saw some Conrail diesels and realized that I had been in the yard one other time. My uncle drove me all over the yard even down to the westbound run through tracks near the westbound hump. In 1971, he took me in and up into one of the Enola hump switch towers. Being from Atlanta, GA, I listened with a slow Southern drawl and these people were talking a mile a minute. Basically, while I was in the tower, a call came through and the tower operator responded and then told my which toggle switch to throw. An SW or NW type switcher moved westbound out of the pocket near the base of the tower onto the hump track and stopped. Another garbled call and the tower operator told me to throw the switch back. I did and the switcher moved east over the hump. I was heaven. We toured the yard and 1971 was the only time I got to visit the turntable and roundhouse and diesel shop. Unfortunately, the only photos I know are from 1971 are those with 1971 on them. The others I am not sure about. I know this is a diesel story and a railfan crossover. If you feel it is better in railfanning, please feel free to move it. If anyone can identify them, please let me know. I don't pretend to know the railroad's plans, however in the earlier areal photo I linked with the two stall still present, there were no tracks to the stalls anyway. I deduce from that the presence of the turntable was not to service the remaining stalls but rather to turn equipment around. If that is the case, I would expect that it would continue to serve in that capacity. There are other surviving turntables on major railroads that have no roundhouse or even storage tracks radiating from them, which I expect fulfill the same role. |
