Post subject:  Santa Fe Locomotive Mechanical Manuals

For many years the Santa Fe Railway produced their own Locomotive Mechanical Manual covering a cross section of the fleet of locomotives they operated at the time of issue of each edition. I would just like to point out that the 1988 edition of the railroad's Locomotive Mechanical Manual is particularly useful as a general instruction handout for museum volunteers. Earlier editions cover a wider range of manufacturers, but the 1988 edition which is primarily written for 2nd generation EMD and GE power, is arranged nicely and is well illustrated. This edition of the manual documents the time just prior to microprocessor locomotive control systems and AC traction motors becoming preferred in the new products.

These manuals are in a 6 x 8.5 inch format in ring binders. They are sometimes found in eBay auctions and at train shows.
