Yesterday, October 19, 2017, was a monumental day in the restoration of our locomotive. It moved for more than a few feet under its own power for the first time since 1968. I have upload a couple of short videos of the event to Youtube for your entertainment.

First is the starting of the Maybach 2000 horse power MD870 engine after installation of a brand new set of starting batteries. All in all, it took about 20 seconds of cranking for the engine to start. https://youtu.be/ZznjQBuKt0o

We ran the 9010 up and down our shop lead with 190 ton SD9 SP5472 and 120 ton NW2 SP1423 in tow . Neither of the other locomotives were running. Please enjoy the video at: https://youtu.be/Xse72j51p7c

Work continues on the cooling system for the engine and transmission. We are receiving new radiator elements at the rate of about 1 a week and hope to have the full package around the end of the year. Once completed, the hood will be re-installed over the transmission and re-connected to the Maybach.

Timely updates are available on our Facebook page at:

and the restorations historical record is at: http://sp9010.ncry.org

THAT is freekin' AWESOME. You guys have pretty much brought a distinctive, remarkable, and extinct locomotive back from the grave. It looks great and seems to pull great. Keep up the superb work!

Congratulations on rescuing a classic of western railroading.

Can you give us a refresher on the status of the various limitations and hindrances on this project? What I mean is with all kinds of parts are being found, replicated and repaired, how far have your plans shifted from the initial goal of a more or less static restoration, and how far will you be able to go towards a full 100% operational locomotive (as in both engines running both trucks powered etc)? Thanks!

Couldn't give a thumbs up to the YouTube video, so I wanted to congratulate all involved for such an amazing restoration. I've enjoyed the updates through the years and looked forward to this day.

The 9010 was never planned to be a static restoration as the original plans called for it to be operated as a MU control cab. When the existence of the complete trucks in France became known, the plans changed significantly. The 9010 will never be "100% operational" simply because the front transmission is gone and no others exist, at least not in serviceable condition. In addition, the #1 engine is junk having been left open to the atmosphere since 1968 and the #1 cooling system was totally removed. So, the answer to your question is that the 9010 will be used for very special operations with short trains and mainly serve as visual reminder of a by-gone era in locomotive development.
