Post subject:  The Latest from the Strasburg Rail Road Shops

Spring time’s a-poppin’ in the shops. Between being 70 degrees one day, and 20 degrees and snowing sideways the next, we are working hard on completing a number of contract jobs, as well as the needed maintenance on our own equipment. Here are some photos to share.

Here are Silver Dollar City’s driving wheels for their #504, ready to ship. They received new tires, had the main crankpins turned, and the other crankpins polished.

We have recently completed sheet replacement and 1472 SDI on Huckleberry Railroad’s #152, though we still have some small parts to complete. Here is the new dome lid.

Here is the bottom of the lid.

This shot shows the new door sheet tacked into place.

Here, the door sheet is welded out and the mud ring rivets are installed. It is ready for staybolts.

Turning around, here is the completed new rear flue sheet with flues rolled and welded in place.

Here, Shelley, Dave, Casey, Mike, and Ross pose with the completed boiler. Several others were also involved in its overhaul, but weren’t available at the time it was completed.

We also recently completed an order for fifty new superheater units for the Reading & Northern’s #2102.

The units are also 20’ long. It will be a tiring job to install all of them.

Here is an order of new non-lifting injector body castings. Over the next several months, they will be machined and put into stock.

J Tower at our East Strasburg terminal is receiving much needed structural repairs to its ground floor that will allow it to remain standing into the foreseeable future.

Initial restoration work continues on our 1911 B&O coach #45?? Here you can see that the structure of the new car body is largely complete, and ready for siding.

Here is one truck frame for the B&O coach, primed and ready for reassembly. This will be our first six axle wooden car.

Our parlor car #88, the Marian is also in the car shop for exterior work and a new rubber roof. Her's was the first rubber roof applied here in 1988.

In the engine house, annual work and running repairs continue as usual. Here, Mike in climbing out of our #89’s smokebox. She is receiving a 1,472 service day inspection, and is expected to return to service in the late summer. Her superheater units lay in the foreground.

Behind #89, #475 is receiving annual repairs, and #8618 is in for her 92 SDI.

#89’s tender has her tank removed so we can perform some repairs to her tender frame.

Behind the backshop, the new 110' shop extension is coming together. We should be able to move in in May.

Thank you Kelly, I was drifting into withdrawal waiting for the latest. I really enjoy these.
Those are some great looking superheater units.

Man someday when the kids go away and I am no longer chained to Michigan I will have to move back to my birth state and get a job with you guys. Until then I will have to dream.

Doug - the second attached photo was taken in late fall of 1984, the first in the summer of 1985 when the NRHS convention was held in Lancaster, so I would guess your photo was somewhere between those two dates.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for narrowing down the time frame.

For what its worth, Mom and her family lived in Harrisburg. Mom and Dad moved to Atlanta, GA in 1961. From about 1982 to 2000, Mom and I would ride the Cresent (Amtrak) to Philly and change to SEPTA for the overnight trip instead of hassling with airplanes.

The last of Mom's family died about 2000-1. A fun 18 years of traveling by passenger train (sleeper).

I've made many a trip to Strasburg.

My uncle worked at the PRR/PC Harrisburg diesel shops and would make an annual trip to the Strasburg Railroad to certify their diesel in the 1960s. The IRS decided that the free Strasburg RR pass Dale received for services was unreported income. My family's slight involvement with the Strasburg ended.

Fun memories of the Harrisburg/Strasburg rail area as well as family.

P.S. I have never ridden the EBT unfortunately. The train left Atlanta about 8PM Friday evening and we got into Harrisburg about 4PM on Saturday. Nana (Mom's Mom) always had a family thing on Sunday.

Returning the train left Harrisburg about 10AM and got into Atlanta about 8AM the next day. After the week's stay, Saturday before departure was Nana's family time.

I never got the times right for riding the EBT and always put it off with the famous "I'll do it next time."

2102's superheaters look good. Now we know where to go in future for 2100.

Nice work on 504. Jim Machacek would be happy to see that it's going to a good home that will properly care for it. I rode behind the engine many times during its days in Northfield, Minnesota.

oh look at us... nothing to see here... just another day...

oh yeah, some narrow gauge drivers,
and some mainline superheaters,
and a wooden coach being restored to operating condition,
and a historic switch tower being maintained,
and a steam locomotive being inspected for a return to operation.

What an amazing place Strasburg is. I was able to visit a few times last year, hoping to return this year. No place else like it!

Nearly 30 years out of a rubber roof on the parlor car? That's impressive. Was there any maintenance over the years?

Was the roof life expired or failing, or was it just a good time to replace it due to the other work being performed on the car?
