I am interested from a general sense. There's quite a lot of it at "my" museums. I don't want anyone to feel like their advice is unheard.

As far as this particular job, it has a fairly small scope. So I'm trying to strike the balance between efficient work and not spending 6 hours gathering the right tools and resources to make a 2-hour job more efficient. This is, as always, guesswork.

Well then get a good torch and go to town with it and a scraper. Follow that with chemical strippers on stubborn bits if necessary.
