Dismissing their long proven CMO (with twenty plus years of tenure) shortly after the start of the project didn't help.

#1309 isn't a project that it was wise to change horses in mid-stream.

Look at the several famous locomotive restoration fails in the US over the years. All have seen multiple supervision replacements prior to grinding to a halt. I think I'm beginning to see a pattern.

I think the sharpest curves on the C&P section going into Frostburg are something like 20 or 22 degrees. In the past my attempts to convert 145m radius (found on Multipower International's website) in to degrees of curvature failed miserably.

I've also found it suspicious that Multipower list both the JS and the QJ as having an identical turning radius.

Maybe Dennis Daughtry could weigh in on that one.

My personal thought is that WMSR need to just stay the course and finish what they started. Probably focusing on the heart of the operation and taking "it'll be done when it pulls into the depot" approach to 1309 would be most productive. I mean who really thought a 2-6-6-2 restoration was going to be quick and easy? Optimism is their only fault I think.

Ben, if I did the math right (namely converting feet of radius to degree of curve from memory) I get 12 degrees as the maximum curvature for a QJ, which surprises me knowing that B&LE 643, a much longer wheelbase 2-10-4, will negotiate No.6 turnouts which have 14 degree curvature.

Did you account for lateral motion devices on the 2-10-4? Not sure that the QJs have those.

Someone posted a link a few weeks back detailing this gentleman's current work, but I have been unable to find it.

The Chinese QJ will negotiate a 15 1/2 degree curve with all lateral at factory new standards the number 1 & 5 driver axles have 20 Millimeters lateral and the number 3 driver tires are blind and yes the locomotives need FRA waiver for lateral the other total drivers lateral is wear limited to 12 Millimeters by Chinese standard practice and is also required by the FRA waiver

Same story as Trains above with a little less paywall, found it while checking for 1309 theft updates:
