Dennis noted:

Quote:
... to be a Mallet, the locomotive must:

1. be articulated
2. be compound

Or it is not a Mallet.

There is some precedent in Wiener (note sp.) for using the term 'single-expansion Mallet', but I note that he uses the qualifier 'so-called Mallet' much more often in this context.

The real 'reason' we choose to call them 'simple articulateds' is that M. Mallet himself very famously stated that compound expansion was an integral part of the patent, and he did not want his name used in conjunction with a simple-expansion locomotive using his scheme of articulation. Why go against the inventor's express wishes?

Did you notice all the fitted Christmas lights for decoration? Need to get a night photo of that.

Fantastic photo! Here's one taken in October of 2016 with the 2-6-6-2 looking a little bit different:

Main difference is headlight moved from top of smokebox and platform built on pilot. Either way she looks great!

Still need to look up something on the railroad this engine was photographed on, but in the meantime, came across this site, about the historical society that runs this engine and apparently others.

Looks like Brazil might be a place to visit for those of us with the resources to do so.

Did a little looking at the historical society site, and check out this little gem.

Could this be a Brazilian Baltimore & Ohio train?

Does the engineer have a control to make it bounce up and down?

Recent discussion of WMSR 1309 brought up questions about other Mallets that are preserved and operational.

Among them was this Brazilian 2-6-6-2.

Anyway, here's another video on the engine, a nice long one.

The railroad it runs on is beautiful and spectacular--one I wish I could see and ride.
