There is some precedent in Wiener (note sp.) for using the term 'single-expansion Mallet', but I note that he uses the qualifier 'so-called Mallet' much more often in this context. The real 'reason' we choose to call them 'simple articulateds' is that M. Mallet himself very famously stated that compound expansion was an integral part of the patent, and he did not want his name used in conjunction with a simple-expansion locomotive using his scheme of articulation. Why go against the inventor's express wishes? |

Still need to look up something on the railroad this engine was photographed on, but in the meantime, came across this site, about the historical society that runs this engine and apparently others. Recent discussion of WMSR 1309 brought up questions about other Mallets that are preserved and operational. Among them was this Brazilian 2-6-6-2.
