OFF TOPIC - (For general information) Due to the worldwide ransomware attack last week, Microsoft has changed their service life policy and taken the step of issuing update patches for earlier versions of Windows, including Windows XP. Since automatic update for XP leads to outdated and inactive Microsoft site pages in most cases, you can take the step of installing the patch yourself, rather than battling your long inactive windows update software. It is available at this Microsoft download page, the operating systems and download links are listed at the bottom of the page:

This is posted for general information for those who are operating older Windows systems.

You can also go to http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com and type 4012598 in the SEARCH box. This will show you the individually downloadable Security Updates for the various obsolete versions of Windows. Windows Update stopped working for me last year, likely for the reasons previously described, but I was easily able to download and install this security patch today from the update catalog.

On later versions, such as Windows 7 and 7 Pro, you can find "Windows Update" in the Start Menu under "All Programs". If you're not set up for automatic updates, go there and update. And if you're running something earlier than XP, lawd help you.

According to an article in the Washington Post, activity regarding this "ransomware" was brought to a standstill--almost accidentally, it seems--by one security expert buying and activating a domain to which the ransomware tries to redirect.

so the ransomware gets baited to this site and gets stuck?

The researcher realized infected machines were checking to see if a domain name was active (like rypn.org). He didn't know why, but he noticed the domain didn't exist. So he registered it. As activation of the domain spread, the "worm" activity started to slow down. Apparently, if the ransomware successfully finds the domain, it shuts down.

The theory is the bad guys put this in as a "kill switch" so they could stop the worm from spreading if they wanted too.
