Well, that would depend upon which way you run it, no? It seems to me the original intention was to run Forneys with the truck leading, making them 4-4-0's. At least one of the early two footers did it this way.

I'm not sure which EJ&S roster is being referred to, but a roster in the May, 1962 Steam Locomotive and Railroad Tradition magazine listed #1 as an 0-4-4T ex Lake Street Elevated #15. EJ&S #2 is listed as an ex-NP 4-4-0.

By the way the Face Book photo is from Paul Bowen, who wrote a book about W. P. Porter the founder of the EJ&S.

Can you please identify that book? Title and publisher?

This is going off on a tangent, but has anyone ever attempted to track where the Chicago elevated locomotives went after the 'L' was electrified? My impression is that most, if not all, were resold.

Hi Frank:
I know of no comprehensive list of dispositions, however, about a dozen Lake Street Elevated and South Side Rapid Transit 0-4-4RTs are listed in: "Locomotives of Southern Iron & Equipment Co." (ISBN Number 978-0-9666247-3-1) by Thomas Lawson, Jr. as having been acquired and sold by SI&E, a major dealer in used locomotives along with Birmingham Rail & Locomotive, Georgia Car & Locomotive and, of course, Hicks Locomotive Works.
Be well,
J.David

PS: If you really want to get into this, start a new thread, thread drift is so annoying! JDC

Don't ask me how this turned up on my Facebook page, but it looks like this pretty 2-6-0 is getting some care.

This page should come up for people on or off Facebook; one of its treats are some photos of No. 6 in service.

Folks,
I am glad to hear that the East Jordan combine is being restored by Mid-Continent Railway Museum. They do great work on wood cars there. I hope that the move into the new Car Shed, which was delayed by this summer's flood, will take place next year!

I wish someone did a model of this engine in HO or O scale brass. Thought about starting with the Wabash F4 mogul and modifying it to resemble #6. I have the video on the old "Glory Machines" VHS tape set of her running in those last years of operation, but summer and winter time shots in the snow. Glad to see her getting refreshed and looking forward to the progress next summer

Just something to add to the file--EJ&S No. 6's builder's photo has turned up.

She does have a nice profile!

All the Chicago elevated Forneys were sold to others through used equipment dealers. They were nearly new when replaced by electric power. CERA books on the "L" have rosters in them for both the South Side and Lake Street lines but more info has come to light since they were published. Bruce Moffat and I wrote an article in the Summer 2012 issue of First & Fastest with the title "Following the Lake Street Forneys," which included an updated roster for the 35 locos of this line. The one that went to the East Jordan & Southern in November 1898 was #15, Rhode Island c/n 2958, "Paul B," which went to the East Jordan Lumber Co originally, then after the EJ&S went to John S. Dalton, a lumber operator in the Chase-Big Rapids area of Michigan, circa 1902-03. In 1904 it went to the Dalton Lumber Co at New Dalton, MI. The mill and loco were sold to the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co in March 1920 and the mill closed in 1925. The loco was moved to upper Michigan and used at the Tilden Mine near Ishpeming as Cleveland Cliffs #1 in 1929 and scrapped in 1930. We had no info on the disposition of 12 of the locos, but since the roster was published we also found that #14 went to the Cameron Lumber Co in Angelina, TX, reducing the unknowns to 11.
