Note the Petoskey newspaper reports that the locomotive was shopped in Grand Rapids, MI in 1945 for $9,000.

It is my understanding from speaking to Howard Noble, past President of the Cadillac & Lake City Railroad, the EJ&E #6 was the preferred choice for the C&LC which began in 1964. One of the attractions was the locomotive was supposedly the last steam locomotive given a full overhaul at the Pere Marquette's Wyoming backshop in Grand Rapids, as the shop was changing over to Diesel maintenance and such service would not be available in the future.

The body of East Jordan & Southern #2 combine is at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.

I hope it goes indoors when they build their new Car Shed #2.

It is pretty amazing that two pieces of equipment have survived from a 6 mile long short line in northern Michigan!

This is going off on a bit of a tangent, but last I heard EJ&S 2 at MCRM was neither a body nor stored outdoors. Admittedly, I haven't been there in a while so things may have changed.

I remember reading an article on the East Jordan & Southern back in the early 60's. As I recall that article, the EJ&S decided to keep one of their two Moguls as a back up when they got their Plymouth. The other engine was newer BUT, it had a wooden cab. So they kept number 6 instead. Maybe I have the facts wrong. It's been a long time since I read the story, but whatever....glad they kept number 6. She is a beauty!

Shortline equipment that survives like that seems to be more common than one might think.

Some examples--other than narrow gauge--that come to mind include Bath & Hammondsport 2-6-0 No. 11 (now operating on the Bellefonte Central in Pennsylvania), and its caboose (number not known)

When Cass Scenic started heritage operations in the 1960s, Its initial locomotives at the time included Shays 1, 4, and 5, plus some of the wooden logging flats. The logging flats are essentially gone, but No. 1 is the B&O Museum in Baltimore, while 4 and 5 are in service at Cass.

DL&W 2-6-0 No. 565 and AC&Y 304 survived, first by resale to the Danville & Mount Morris, and later both going to Steamtown--the 565 unfortunately becoming victim of a controversial restoration effort.

How many other examples of surviving shortline equipment are around that are represented by multiple pieces? Buffalo Creek & Gauley and Elk River Coal & Lumber come to mind, with 3 BC&G 2-8-0s around, and a Climax, a Shay, a 2-8-2 ("gob pile" service) and a 4-wheel caboose from ERC&L that have all made it into preservation. There are certainly other examples from a variety of shortlines.

A lot of what was preserved was saved because it was what belonged to the marginal railroads that couldn't afford to replace it, and just kept using it until the railroad died economically. Mainline equipment was replaced rapidly as technologies changed. In the 1920s this provided new equipment for the shortlines and industrials - in the 1950s, there were no domestic buyers left for used state of the art steam and heavyweight Pullmans.

EJ&S #2 is presently inside Mid-Continent's Car Shop and is undergoing restoration. For anyone in the area and interested in seeing it in person, there are Car Shop tours going on this Saturday afternoon (May 20, 2017).

EJ&S combine No. 2 is currently in the Car Shop at Mid-Continent Rwy Museum undergoing restoration. For those unfamiliar with the car here is a brief history.

Built Nov 1864 as a coach by Osgood Bradley for the Grand Trunk Rwy and most likely operated between Detroit and Port Huron, Mi.
Rebuilt and modernized at Chicago and Grand Trunk Shops in 1889.
Sold to EJ&S via Hick Locomotive and Car Works in 1902.
Rebuilt into combine by EJ&S in 1919.
Moved to Mid-Continent in North Freedom, WI in 1963.

While we feel we have a fairly complete history we can always use more especially early photos. Current work includes replacing the side sills and siding. Plans include installing new roofing and refinishing the interior woodwork which like other early passenger cars is built using mahogany, ash, walnut and cherry. Help with this work is always welcome.

Not to try and go off topic on the #6 being moved but.........Think the East Jordan #2 has probably been under a roof longer than any other coach on the property? Dave Wantz had me tear off the remaining roof {not much to tear off either} which was leaking very badly. This was done after we put it in the engine house on that rainy day. He figured if the car didn't have a roof at all it couldn't go outside. It worked for a lot of years too. This was in the 1970s before we had a car shop which to my understanding it has been in since that construction happened? Maybe it was outside under a tarp for a while I don't know for sure? It is a neat car and if Pete Becker has his way this will be a nicely restored addition to the wooden car fleet. Was actually in service mostly as a ticket office in 1963. But it had a lot of flex when going down the track. Very old car with some cool northern Michigan history.

PS: after thinking about it maybe the CN&W narrow gauge combine has been under a roof longer as it was under the display shed for years too?

Weird story involving EJ&S No. 6:

Sometime in the 1980's another steam fan and myself stopped into East Jordan to look at No. 6 and the fabulously-bucolic East Jordan Iron Works. As we looked over the 2-6-0, we realized the tender was dripping. A look in the tank revealed that it was full of water. We went into the nearby city hall, and a clerk told us that someone had intended to steam up the engine for a city festival. Obviously, and for obvious reasons, that didn't happen. Since it was fall, we took it upon ourselves to open drain valves to keep the tender from turning into a popsicle. We left town and never heard any more about it.

You never know what you'll find. And you never know what will happen if you leave a steam engine sitting around.

Just something to add to the file that turned up on my Facebook page, and as far as I can tell, are "public:" a photo of EJ&S No. 1, a former Chicago Elevated Forney being delivered by water to East Jordan, ca. 1899.

What's interesting is that if this is EJ&S No. 1, it isn't the 4-4-0 that's on the roster, but an 0-4-4T.
