Some film clips from that source, posted by Steve Lerro on YouTube: Unused footage that looks like it was for the NYC publicity film, "Flight of the Century:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_dFyHcMWsQ Outtake clips from the Boston & Maine, featuring early Lima 2-8-4s, plus a fellow talking about the political situation in Haiti at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJBKfgpm5pQ Footage on the Southern Pacific, featuring a Cab-Forward and a 4-10-2, the latter a three-cylinder job with an interesting sound. . .plus a repair shop sequence on a similar engine as a rod gang works at remounting a massive main rod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZyY0Ec-OUc This has to be a rarity--film on the Chesapeake Beach Railway in Maryland, a line founded by the narrow gauge king of Colorado, Otto Mears! It's on an electrified railroad, but I can't identify the MU cars that appear. I'm inclined to think it's near Philadelphia. Had to add this one. . .the evolution of locomotives in models, apparently some sort of exhibit or public relations showing by the NYC. What's most interesting is that there is no mistaking the models. . .the work of Ernest Warther, a master woodcarver, working in various woods, including ebony, and also in ivory! He's gone, but his models and other things are still with us today at the Warther Museum in Dover, Oh. There is also a short clip of a young Mr. Warther at the end, and we even have footage of a steamed up 999: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqmR-cnnCeQ Link to the museum itself; I remember visiting it when I was a lot younger, and revisiting later--and I still recommend it today. http://thewarthermuseum.com/ |

The Chesapeake Beach footage was filmed in Seat Pleasant, Maryland at the location where the streetcars from Washington Railway and Electric (WRECo) met the train. The Washington Baltimore and Annapolis interurban trains also met here at the end of their private right of way to travel in and out of downtown Washington DC on street railway tracks of WRECo. It was a busy place. The white bank building still stands in Seat Pleasant. Someone with Google map skills can probably locate a current street view. Wesley |

The location is definitely Charleston, and the man is Mayor Thomas Porcher Stoney, Mayor of Charleston from 1923 until 1931. You'll notice he pronounces "98 years" just like Senator Fritz Hollings would. |
