Post subject:  73 years ago , tonight ,D-Day .

73 years ago , tonight, June 6th D-Day . My dad was a Half Track driver . My uncle was in a Railway Engineers division made up mostly of Milwaukee Road railroaders .

May God grant them all peace after this life, especially those who made the greatest sacrifice on the French coastline. I shudder to think of how the world would have turned out under Nazi domination.

M: The Milwaukee Road sponsored the 744th Railway Operating Battalion and the 757th Railway Shop Battalion, both of which served in the ETO. Here's some information on the 744th:

The 728th Railway Operating Battalion was sponsored by the L&N. it arrived in a France soon after D-Day and opened up the Port of Cherbourg after it fell. If you've ever seen a photo of the "Toot Sweet Express" those are L&N employees in the photo who operated it.
