Norfolk Southern heavily rebuilt all eight at its Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania during 2005. These are now classified by Amtrak as GP38H-3, and work as maintenance-of-way trains or standby power for Downeaster or New England trains.

Thanks for update. GO celebrated 50 years recently. These were the original commuter diesels a special GMD design not repeated. Some local interest in seeing one preserved here in Toronto.

GO reacquired one of the original cab control coaches from 1967 and it is on display at John Street roundhouse in downtown Toronto.

Since these were rebuilt only 5 years ago have to assume they will be around Amtrak for some time and therefore no rush to preserve one.

As I remember those particular locomotives, GO Transit had some host railroad weight restriction issues and as a result, they had smaller fuel tanks, which worked out OK for Toronto commuter service but limited the locomotives range in Amtrak service, hence, working short-haul and close to fuel facilities assignments.

I recall first encountering these in CN freight service in a dark blue image and numbered in the 9800s. As originally used at GO the HEP set was, hands down, the LOUDEST such application on the planet. It hurt the ears just to walk past one of these.

I recall, at the time, being a regular MARC rider, MARC had a locomotive shortage and had leased one of these from Amtrak for use on the NEC.

One day arrived at the MARC station to find the train before mine sitting at the station, dead. The crew was cranking the Amtrak locomotive over with no results. A few minutes later, the next MARC train arrived. They coupled up to the dead train, but had to wait for someone to arrive to hook up the HEP. This didn't work, so after more than hour's delay, they ended up shoving us to Union Station at 20mph since the crew in the front cab car had no controls, only a radio.

It was a hot day, both trains were packed and it took more than hour to make that 15 minute run.

The next day, one of the crew said MARC shop forces had replaced the fuel gauge, but had replaced it with the wrong gauge, and the locomotive had run dry.
