I have encountered a lot of oddities in the course of supporting http://www.steamlocomotive.info. If the title intrigues, do feel free to visit: https://steaminfo.wordpress.com/2017/06/29/an-0-10-0-that-isnt-anymore/

I want more info on the pizza oven?

Oh, and wouldn't this be an 0-0-4?

I like the pizza oven idea. Could you put a portable rack inside a firebox? And would a pizza fit through a standard firebox door?

Yes a pizza will fit through a firebox door. Also, if you clean and oil a shovel you can cook one over a coal fire, though it will scorch the shovel handle.

The boiler is the most inefficient part of the locomotive so it makes sense to get rid of it. Actually, considering the operation as a whole, the train is what really taxes efficiency so get rid of that, too.

Would you really want to cook with direct exposure to a coal fire? A lot of things in those gases you probably ought not to eat and while cooking after the fire has burned down to coke might be okay I'd bet there would still be trace amounts. In Life on a Locomotive, George Williams' bio of his dad "Buddy," the C&NW hogger, I recall there was a story about cooking steaks but it involved putting a thick steel plate into the fire, and then cooking on it after it was withdrawn.

I like burning some coal in the BBQ to enjoy the aroma. Get it good and hot with charcoal then add the coal. But I never would cook on that.

there is a coal fired pizza place not far from here.

If the firebox was sealed, you could get enough steam pressure to a few pounds and move it around, but they lopped off about anything requiring it to move on its own, maybe blow a pea whistle or something tho.

I didn't say it was a great idea, just that it can be done. You're right, you use a nicely banked fire, with no smoke. You can cook frozen pizza, chicken, burgers, steak. Basically anything you can grill. I suspect the exposure to coal smoke is no worse than the wood smoke from your local wood fired pizza parlor. Also, this isn't something you'd do often. The plate could be a good idea, as it does tend to be hard on shovels.

I will dig up whatever locomotive it was that has been turned into an oven, and post the photo. I just have 600 or 700 photos to look through.

Aw c'mon, who wouldn't want a 4501 cooked pizza?

As they say, there's a prototype for everything.

A wood fired or coal fired oven is hotter than the usual cooking, it can take 30 seconds to a minute to cook the pizza. Any hot steam engine you can pop it in on a long ladle, bring it out and there you go.
