Some EMD related questions that came in this month, sharing with the community in the event that they are of interest: Q: Is there an archive of EMD paint and styling drawings? A: Yes, the National Model Railroad Association (NRMA) has the Bruce Meyer collection of EMD Paint and Styling drawings. I have recently been advised that they have these available for download through their website. Q: We have an old 567A engine with serial number ####. Is there any way to find out what it was originally applied to? A: Not likely. Railroad 567A engine serial numbers were sometimes listed along with the locomotive builders number in the EMD internal Field Service News. Copies of that are rare. Serial numbers that begin with "N" usually indicate engines originally ordered by the Navy. The engines built for the military were sold by GM Diesel Sales Corporation and were usually not carried on production lists by EMD. Starting with the 567C production, EMD began putting marine and industrial engine serial numbers in the product reference books. Q: Is anybody from the Winton Engine Company still alive? A: They are likely all deceased now. Winton Engine became Cleveland Diesel Division of GM in 1938, according to announcements in Diesel Progress Magazine and Railway Age. Anybody who was 20 years old, working for Winton that year, would have been born around 1918 and be 99 years old now. Q: How can we locate someone who can travel to our location to troubleshoot a problem with our EMD locomotive? A: There are people who travel to a customer location to do this work, also companies with service trucks that can provide repairs on site. Check with ASLRRA or ATRRM (Heritage Rail Alliance) for references, or consult ads in industry magazines. Q: Are there any printed references on diesel shops designed by EMD? A: Yes, there is a 1940s era large-format EMD publication called FACILITIES. It has a gray and maroon cover, and features exterior and cutaway drawings of EMD designed diesel shops, with art by EMD staff artist William Hottinger. Good luck finding one. They probably only printed a very small number originally and they are very scarce. The Hottinger illustrations of cutaway shops would make great wall art for a Railroad Museum.
