Hasn't this story been debunked MULTIPLE TIMES on this and other forums in the past?

Howdy; So, what exactly will be the Iron Horse Society at Steamtowns's mandate? And what are guidelines, put in place by the NPS, will they have to follow? Thanks - David Notarius, Ex New Hope PA - sinking in the Fens of Cambridgeshire UK

I would think having a number of dedicated volunteers, working with shop oversight, and assigned to individual pieces of equipment, would be one of the best things Steamtown could do to renovate and rebuild the static exhibits. My nominations would not only include 565, but the Long Island rotary plow and Maine Central 519.
Good luck with this, and let's hope it proves to significantly better everything at the NHS.

David thanks for your question.

Ultimately the organization is there to support the efforts of SNHS, as ambiguous as that statement is.

The role of "Friends" groups is defined by Director's Order 21 (the National Park Service) and that document discusses the nature of a friends group, and Section 1 indicates the role of such groups in general terms.

(Expected to be reissued soon)

Post Script:

I am led to believe it was revised last December, as least in "proposed" format.

https://www.nps.gov/policy/DOrders/DO_21.htm

it is anticipated that there will be meetings with the Superintendent (at least annually) to identify objectives where the group can assist, that are of the greatest need to Steamtown, greatest interest to the organization and within the organization's current and expected capacity.

I expect that the initial projects we undertake to participate in will be small to develop capacity and the trust that will be necessary for an effective working relationship. We were not formed to operate in conflict with SNHS and will not be functioning as "shadow management" nor will we be running some sort of independent project idea group.

The professional staff will identify Site priorities and we will support them as best as we can given our interests and capacity. There may be things like advertising (Which the NPS is prohibited from doing) that we can assist with given the development of adequate capital-although the development and importance of social media might mean that we never need to buy a TV or radio spot, something that was a "Holy Grail" as late as five years ago, when the late Tom Shore was pursuing this idea.

Part of the time involved in launching this group is due to the fact that there are already established partnerships with other groups such as the ARHS and the LWV Chapter of the NRHS and whose working history with SNHS is established and productive and we respect, admire and support. The ARHS in particular, with onsite presence, was extremely helpful in providing an example of an effective working partnership.

By way of example, we won't be competing with the LWV Chapter that is the principal external fundraiser for the Boston and Maine 3713 project. It would be both unappreciative of their efforts and counterproductive to step on other dance partners' toes. In this respect, we have an extra layer of considerations to make with regard to operational decisions.

I can tell you that at least two Board Members have been supplementing their train and engine volunteer time with time spent in the shop of late. Other train and engine service employees are doing the same. In as much as the current Board has been is comprised exclusively of Train and Engine service volunteer (we are actively seeking non T&E members and people who bring a different perspective, such as Interpretative Volunteers and people with no current personal relationship to Steamtown) it is likely that we will be interested in supporting things that keep steel wheels rolling on steel rails, but any significant efforts in that regard will be dependent on our ability to nurture funding.

My best wishes for a highly successful effort. Let's hope you can bring some new energy into the whole S'Town act. Hope springs eternal.
