Al Crisp here; No we have not purchased the locomotive. My comments are only made as someone[now retired ] who moved heavy and large objects all my working life. I have just outlined the basic steps needed to get the loco moved and loaded for moving. We are attempting to find a home for it and how it would be funded, preferably back in Canada. Having a price tag on it with an odd sounding deadline, makes it all that more difficult,on the bright side cutting it up in place looks to be no bed of roses. Looking at it from space I see no easy way to get the cuts into truck and it would be about 7 or 8 roll off bins worth. Scrap on good day with a downhill tailwind delivered is about 120 a ton.
Anybody have any useful suggestion, feel to add them to this dialogue. Al Crisp

Mr. Crisp,
One is reluctant to respond given what has been said so far.
However, congratulations to you for offering to provide the moving expertise.
I met the owner of the locomotive a number of years back and he seemed like a decent chap.
Step one might be to contact him and clarify his position and whether the engine can be purchased and moved.
Step two could be a crowd funding exercise.
Finding a permanent home in Ontario might be difficult. The museums that come to mind might be reluctant to be involved with the purchase and move because of the cost, but they could be interested in housing the engine, at least, for a temporary shelter.
A possible contact could be the Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology, or an approach to the city or the conservation authority which owns that site. I have no idea if they would consent, but it never hurts to follow up possibilities. I have had dealings with them on other projects and they have been open to discussion, at least.
At the very least, the saving of the loco and transporting it to a secure storage site would be the priority. That seems do-able.

Good for me if she get a place in Canada or USA whatever she be out of scrap.

I just start the idea the Toronto Railway Museum would be a good fit not the ONLY place on the world. And the fact the Toronto area was close of Buffalo where 5361 stand.

And the south Ontario is not only Toronto. ECRM in St. Thomas was a good fit too.

The Toronto Railway Historical Association (TRHA) was established in 2001 and is now incorporated as a federally registered charity. joe6167 your the first i read said the museum has a problem but if was true, i don't think that the same situation of the Indiana transportation museum for exemple

Well, most, if not all of this is "common" knowledge, and a lot of it can be deduced through observation: When the museum has lost almost all of its facilities, scares away competent volunteers in order to retain incompetent volunteers, is subject to the whims of several competing interests (the city, Steam Whistle, The Rec Room), and is subject to the engineering limitations of the site, well, sometimes you just got stick your head in the water and see what's going on.

For privacy reasons I didn't want to publish the name of the owner of 5361 in this forum, but he has made himself known in a group on Facebook today. So if you are interested in purchasing the locomotive Terry Sprague can be contacted through there... https://www.facebook.com/groups/1515753 ... 417200115/

Al Crisp here; For a host of reasons I do not subscribe to Facebook, thank you anyway. Personally I am in no way in a position to purchase 5361. Normally these things are a donation to a non profit and my only skin in the game other then the loco's place In Canadian history is an offer of my professional services in arranging a successful move.By way of note since retiring I have been involved in the moving of antique boats large and small. My comments about these things where private and public interest meet is never simple. As an example a couple years ago I was moving an antique race boat to Canada that was cleared to cross. At least I thought as I had a PARS cleared number but upon arriving at the Canadian side I was asked for a 1,000,000$ bond. What could I say do you take VISA?? That only reinforced why I stopped crossing the border for a living!! Going the other was no better. I was told by the American Customs officer I had a load of informational pamphlets[also pre cleared] when I clearly had a large boat on the trailer. And these people walk among us and are in charge of our safety in the world??!! Cheers AL

Guys it's not complicated. If this owner means what he says...unless he gets a minimum of $ 100k US cash the engine will be scrapped in place ... then the odds are at least 80/20 that she will get scrapped in place.

Sad but true. IMHO- Ross Rowland

I understand that but has he attempted to sell it on the open market. I see no mention in the rail press anywhere that I have read in the last few months, just on this site. So are we just talking in vacuum and he really just wants shot of the beast ASAP. I can not see scrapping in that location as profitable deal. My only hope in that end is that the resulting steel finds it's way into new Teslas!! Al Crisp

Al, I think your offer to assist COULD make a big difference, as that is about half of the problem taken care of. The other half, an owner with unrealistic expectations, may change at some point and then you can jump in with your offer. Promising his heirs a mess to clean up is not likely attractive to them ("be nice to me or I won't let you deal with scrap dealers and environmental remediation specialists for almost no return when I kick the bucket").

Unless Al is offering to foot the bill for the move it doesn't take care of anything.

That was implied, the labor and equipment anyway as an in kind donation (no bill if you are doing it yourself), if not it is just an ad.

Canadian Pacific doesn't even have any interest in the one they have, so why would they want this one?

The chances of the CP having any interest in this engine are between slim and none....and slim has left town.
