Hey there all you wrecker people,

I just purchased 730' of new 1 1/4" and 1 1/8" wire rope for our (IRM) Bucyrus Model 160-17 1/2 wrecker . These new wire ropes are for the boom hoist , main and auxiliary hooks respectively . I'm so happy I got one heck of a deal. $4.40 a foot for the 1 1/4" and $3.80 for the 1 1/8". The Nominal Breaking Strength for the 1 1/4" is 130,000 LBs. The actual when tested was 134,000 LBs. Non domestic but still meeting the criteria for the North America market . Here's were to go.

Having brand new wire rope reduces risk .

Mark - I've been keeping track of your posts on rigging, etc. as we slowly work towards getting our wrecker operational. I, for one, definitely do appreciate all the tips. We have a bit more to do before we finally get to the rigging. At a glance, our rope doesn't look too bad i.e. no physical damage noticed but we haven't fully inspected it yet. I certainly wouldn't trust it for a heavy lift, anyway. I'll post more info on progress as we get further along.

Keep those tips coming.

Thanks,

Hey Eric ,
Glad to be of help. We had decent wire rope on our wrecker but it was getting kinda short from me cutting off the unacceptable stuff while still leaving enough wraps on the drum for proper securement . Then a couple of weeks ago while unloading two recently acquired Milwaukee Road light weight coaches , I noticed 5 more broken wires in one wrap on the main hook. Not that terrible but I was tired of worrying about it . I'm now going to install the brand spanking new wire rope on everything and be done with it ,and with proper lubrication , probably for the rest of my life .
Check out my next thread . It will be pertinent

Mark
