Just ran across this old film clip of a Lehigh Valley Transit "grease car" in action. First time I've ever heard about trolley wire greasing. Interesting. Description reads: Quote: A Gerhard Salomon Film Snippet. Car 79 in service greasing the wire at Gehman Trestle 1950 or 1951. Liberty Bell Cars (passenger and freight) used Miller Trolley shoes for wire contact. These devices did not have carbon inserts to lubricate the overhead. rock island lines wrote: First time I've ever heard about trolley wire greasing. Holy Buckets! Great videos! In the snow plow video, the sweeper gets stuck in a snow drift around the 1:35 mark. Pacific Electric also used wire greasers as they had a fair amount of steel trolley wire. I wonder who else used wire greasers? Thanks! |

Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee. Line car 606 (which stayed on the CTA for Skokie line maintenance and was eventually lost to a fire) was set up for wire greasing. |

I was shown a slide of this car, and the Pennsylvania Dutch motorman who showed it to me told me that it was the "schmutz car". (that's pronounced as in "put") "Put some schmutz on the wire oncet" Gerhard Salomon was the consummate trolley fan. I understand that he was one of the founders of "Railways to Yesterday" next to the East Broad Top in Orbisonia, PA. We lost Gerhard a few years ago, and he is still sorely missed. His legacy lives on with his three sons who are active trolley buffs. All great people. |
