Quote:
The old Pennsylvania Railroad caboose that has been a roadside fixture in Chestnut, Ill. for decades will find a new home this week.
On Tuesday, the car was removed from its track on the Marten property for the first time in 29 years. Today, it will make its way the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, Ill. where it will join 13 other cabooses on display for railway fans from around the world.
The caboose was brought to town by rail in 1988 to become the centerpiece of Chestnut resident Dwain Marten’s private train collection.

It arrived Wednesday morning at Monticello:

PRR 477692 is not listed in Roger Kirkpatrick's "Captive Cabeese" (which, by the way, is now once again available after 200 unsold copies were discovered in storage!). http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMCD ... hestnut_IL

Always good to see a preserved piece go to a place that is well run and knows how to take care of its artifacts. Just in time for Railroad Days at Monticello Railway Museum, Saturday September 16 and Sunday September 17 with 2-8-0 Southern 401 and pretty much non-stop passenger and freight action. Unlimited train rides from 10am-5pm both days on their 8 mile railroad.
