I find it odd that there hasn't been a peep of comment on here that the group restoring ATSF 2926 has finished and submitted the Form 4 for the locomotive. Is that not as much of a milestone for the restoration as I think it is?

And why has no one else said something about it? Are there reasons for some folks, apart from the usual triple-Ns, not to know?

I'm going to stick my foot in and take a guess that people here dont like the way that NMSL&RHS does their outreach - which is primarily through Facebook. Yes I've seen mention of them on TO but that is by a person who follows them on FB. I realize the old fogies dont like social media, but more and more groups are using it to large success as a platform for reaching a very large audience. And there is the issue that these older railroad preservation forums have a bit of a negative reputation with the younger crowd - lots of nay-saying and bashing of certain people and/or groups happens on them.

The form 4 was finished a while ago. As I understand it, the locomotive has a working pressure of limitation due to tube thickness so it something like 280 instead of 300.

Yes but it was just signed on Oct 10th and sent off to the FRA.

Another milestone was reached as our crew gathered around to witness the signing of the Form 4 which will be forwarded to the FRA. The Steam Locomotive Form 4 is the document that assures the boiler will hold working pressure safely. Many hours were spent by Frank G. and Larry L. performing all the calculations required and compiling all the documents relating to our work over the past 15 years. Also many thanks go out to our adviser Pat B. who has also donated many hours of welding reviews and expertise.

the pressure reduction due to tube thickness has been known for a while. Given the history of form 4 with the class the calcs were going to be an interesting study for many. It is interesting that new tube thickness became the limiting structure. The internet site Trainorders reported 290 psi operating pressure several weeks ago and other personal sources reported it earlier. Given when they moved the locomotive from the siding to the warehouse that the wheels did not turn for several feet as almost a warning about what they wanted to tackle they have come a long way in their effort.
The bigger question is where will it operate. BNSF transcon is not easily assessable and how many trips up to Las Vegas or Raton would you be able o sell.

Further, that BNSF line is not really considered the "Transcon" anymore, as most of the heavy traffic now rolls through Texas instead of over Raton Pass. We're talking a major main line that, were it not for the Amtrak Southwest Chief, New Mexico's Rail Runner commuter trains, and one coal-fired power plant on its way out, would be embargoed and mothballed just like Tennessee Pass and Saluda.

Even though I am on Facebook, I don't follow them on Facebook, rather through their updates on their home page at http://www.nmslrhs.org/Status/status.php
They are one group that always keeps their supporters in the loop by providing work updates, pictures of their progress, fundraising campaigns (currently they are well on their way to getting a genuine Santa Fe baggage car for a tool car). They thank their sponsors publicly, both private and corporate. When I send them a donation, I always get a thank you card, a Christmas card, and I can see where my money went. They are without a doubt the model of how to keep their supporters in the loop and engaged. I can look at their picture updates and say "well there's Danny welding, Dr.Mike bending a new pipe, Gail looking over the books" etc..I've never met the crew, but they have made them seem like family, I think I shed a tear when I read that Carlos was retiring after so many hours welding on her. I can't wait to see pictures of her getting that new firebrick hot.

A reduction of MWP of less than 7% isn't that big of a deal but I must ask why, since presumably these are all new tubes, they didn't go with material for 300#. In asking I do not mean to suggest there is not a perfectly good reason such as the rules changing after they began or the thicker wall tubes were not available, etc. Just curious what it was.

I imagine they could have got to 300 psi, but it would have required an expensive special contract with the tube supplier. Far cheaper to buy regular "run of the mill" tube that is already in production. Yes, that is where the expression comes from...

I'd also presume that she won't be worked daily in heavy service like she was when in revenue service - the few PSI difference won't be of critical mass or import under those circumstances. I've done a lot of fun railroading at under 150 PSI.

Three questions that no one seems to have raised at this point:

1. Are turning facilities available at either Lamy or Las Vegas?

2. Are suitable coaches available?

3. Is this route available?

Wye at Lamy, though a bit tight and trackwork will be needed.

HUGE roundhouse in Las Vegas, but no turntable.........
