A few clarifications regarding the past couple of posts:

Like all cars from this era the deck sashes (also know as clearstory windows) in the GN #3261 were built to open. However due to the delicate nature of the frames and the stained glass we have elected to keep the deck sashes fixed. We have removed the deck sash pulls to eliminate the urge to pull on them and damage the frames.

As built, the deck sash screens were in place to provide ventilation in the car. The screens allowed air circulation and ventilation while preventing cinders from entering the car. Mid-Continent built and installed deck screens for the GN 3261 a number years ago to recreate the original appearance although they no longer provide any ventilation.

I hope this helps to clarify the questions about the desk sashes and screens.

I've had the privilege to have ridden in this car. Quite a beautiful artifact, and another gem in Mid-Continents car collection.

Say, inside the car the deck sashes have a curved arch, but outside they are rectangular. Thoughts? (conspiracy: it's not really the same car!)

When all those sashes are open, I wonder what the experience is like when a big plume of coal smoke rolls down over the train?

Answer here:

I believe the "panels" you are seeing are fly screens, which are missing in all the earlier photos, so allow the elliptical sash to show.

I was just in this car earlier this year, and it retains the elliptical clerestory sash.

Rectangular screens filling the space between the deck posts covering the elliptical deck light openings seemed to be pretty common during the era this car was built.
