I noticed in both images that the consist is FA2/RS3/FB2/RS3 with another FA2 trailing in the #359 image. Was this something normal on the L&N or just coincidence?

The light gray/yellow nose L&N scheme wasn't too bad, but can't hold a candle to the original dark blue (black?) body with crème colored stripes trimmed in red. Can't find a photo of #314 in that scheme, but here is number 359 wearing it:

The L&N red herald on the nose is the clincher!

I agree that is the best scheme Les. There is also a more basic black/ dark blue with a round red emblem on the nose:

Hopefully IRM has a photo of #314 as delivered, but I'm sure it isn't the grey and yellow.

IIRC black was on freight units while blue was on passenger units.

I grew up with the Long Island Rail Road's assorted Diesels. Commuted on the Port Jefferson Line.

But my father was from Kentucky so I am glad that a L&N Diesel is being restored. IRM also has a L&N dining
car which I hope they paint some day.

Down in Bowling Green, Kentucky the Railroad Park has filled the old station with displays, a model railroad and they have a couple of car bodies outside. Well worth visiting!

Just wish they could have gotten a real L&N dining car... that Espee car is a good stand-in but that is all that it is...

Looking forward to the FA being restored!!!

Excuse me, but what "Espee car" are you referring to?

It would appear that myself, and at least 2 other people, assumed your comment was about L&N 2726 at IRM, thereby illustrating the dangers of cropping a quote too close to the bone...............

Can someone provide an update on the restoration of L&N 314 at IRM?

The last two updates on L&N 314 on the IRM diesel facebook page were in 2017 and 2019:

"June 13, 2019 · Union, IL ·
The cab of the Minnesota Transfer 200 was recently restored. Approximately 100 hours were spent restoring the 1953 ALCO's cab. Here you can see the before and after images of the cab.
Work continues in the shop on the Milwaukee Road 33C and the L&N 314, as well as several other units rotating through the shop for inspections in preparation for DIESEL WEEKEND on August 9, 10 and 11 this year." https://www.facebook.com/IRMDieselShop/ ... 933163254/

"October 7, 2017 · Union, IL ·
L&N 314 in the shop. Electrical cabinet stripped and primed. Rewiring under way. As you can see the prime mover did remain during the conversion to a power car by Long Island. Traction motors are on the way soon." https://www.facebook.com/IRMDieselShop/ ... 064227549/

Two quick questions. First, concerning the photo of Minnesota Transfer # 200 from 2019, was that the original paint scheme for the unit? Secondly, the 2017 report mentioned traction motors "on the way"; did those arrive and get installed on L&N 314?

Thanks!

Les

To the latter question:

Yes, and probably not yet (I'm not sure).

IRM acquired a former NS / SR slug cut down from an RS3 via NREX. It is said to be ex CofG. It was still sitting around the last time I noticed.

One presumes they would just swap the entire trucks when they reach that point.
