The little PRR H-3 Consolidation #1187 at the RR Museum of PA would be a prime candidate. No chance of it ever steaming, however the PRR went over that engine with a fine toothed comb before displaying it at the Railroad Exposition at the 1939 World's Fair. She is still in mighty fine shape today.

So was #7002 prior to 1983. It had fresh lathe marks on all of the piston valve parts, new lower side sheets with mill scale still on them (held in place by staybolts that were still shiny), brand new injectors, and a brand new tender tank that had never held water. All this work dated from 1939, well before the RR's started cutting corners in steam locomotive maintenance that was evident in the 1950's.

I feel that it was a huge mistake to return her to service. Now she is just another partially worn out stuffed and mounted engine, and all of the evidence of exactly how Altoona did things before the diesel is lost.
