There have been other efforts to launch a "wiki-style" railfan and history map before, such as "Railfan's Guide to Google Earth," but this one, based on OpenStreetMap data, looks a bit promising.

WARNING: Extraordinarily HIGH potential for "addiction" and lost time!

Is your rail line accurately depicted?

Interesting. Pretty accurate for us, except they labeled all the suburban railway network as "light rail". The suburban network has been listed as a closed network for some years now, and will have an incompatible signal system by 2020, but it is build to heavy rail standards and was a freight railway up until 2010.

Don't like what you see? That's the beauty of it! As a user edited source, just make an account on OpenStreetMap and edit the designations or statuses of your tracks. I'm not sure how often it updates with all recent edits, but I believe it's something like once every hour.

E&B? It may not be as beyond salvage as you think. Give me a name and general location of the error an it shouldn't be too hard to fix up, the software is pretty easy to use.

Ok - I have to ask - is there any way to change the legend from km/h to mph, for us American folks? :) I'm not readily finding a way to do so.

Yeah, I don't think the creator realized the abandoned Elgin & Belvidere was an interurban, and there should be gaps in the ROW where the line took to the streets to go through towns. I'm familiar with the routes through Huntly, Union, and Marengo if anyone wants to attempt an edit... should street trackage be shown when showing an abandoned railroad route?

This is an interesting project.

I would like to know the source for a particular map area. If ORM tells me that the xyz branch turned west after it crossed Main St in Podunk, and that there was a wye there, how do I know if this is correct? Suppose I have another source that says that the turn and wye came after the crossing of Mill St? Short of walking the area, and looking for evidence, I don't know how to tell if the ORM is correct.

I'm also finding that some of the dashed lines are very similar and hard to tell apart.

Aside from those caveats, this is a fun thing to look at.
